Title: GA-MA790GP-UD4H + Phenom 550 won't post
Post by: screenager on July 08, 2010, 10:10:11 am
Hi there. This is my current config:

MA790GP-UD4H
Athlon 64x2 5200+ (65nm brisbane)
2gb ddr2 800 A-Data
XFX HD4870
LC-Power Hyperion 700w

I wanted to upgrade my cpu, so i got a Phenom 550 (rev. c2)

After installation, it didn't post: no beep, no display, fans&hdd spinning.
So i took everything out from the case, unplugged everything, did a CMOS reset (left the battery our for an hour to be sure), and it still won't boot.
I did anything: only one stick of rame in each slot, integrated video card, various bios versione (if i use my old 5200+ everything works fine), cmos resets, but nothing seems to work.
Weird fact: if i use phenom's box cooler, its fan will always spin. If I use my AC Freezer, fan will spin a little when i turn computer on, then stop, and spin a little again when i turn it off (I have to use the psu interruptor to do so).

Any suggestions?

I think that you probably need to do a BIOS update to run your new processor.

As I said, i installed various bios version (from the latest F7beta to the F2, the first bios supporting this processor on that board). After each update, I did a CMOS reset. It will always boot with my old 5200+, I checked in the bios various times but i coudn't find anything wrong (I loaded standard settings, too).

Sorry my mistake missed the bit about updating the BIOS. :-[
It would all point to a power supply problem. Even though yours would seem to be plenty big enough. How old is it? Have you made sure the EATX 12v power cable is connected properly?

It's just less or more 1 year old. Yeah, everything is plugged fine (as i said, it works with the 5200+). I don't think that the PSU is a problem, because phenom 550 doesn't need that much power more than the 5200 and that psu can handle my 4870 without any problem; if the wattage wasn't enoguh for the cpu, unplugging the video card would make it post...but nothing.

Hi,

It could be a faulty CPU (it does happen). The fact that everything else works OK would point to this and, as you say, there is not that much difference in power requirements from the 5200+ and the 550. Also the fact that you have tried to update BIOS, with no success, says that there is something else wrong.

I would suggest returning the CPU to your place of purchase, where they can check it out, or replace it if it is faulty.

Thanks for the assistance. Yes, I've been thinking of a faulty CPU, so today i'm gonna try it on another system. I bloody hell hope it won't work, else I won't know what to do :D

If it does work on another mobo, try another PSU on your own rig (as Dark Mantis mentioned). Although it seems unlikely, this is the next thing to eliminate as a problem.

Turned out to be a faulty cpu; mounted a Phenom II X3 720, and works like a charm.

Annoying when this happens as it is not what you expect at all. Pleased though, that you have got it sorted and that your PC is now running  happily.

hi try its your ram i have 2 phenoms 550 B50x4 both running 555 18
match pairs of Corsair XMS2 -6400 CL4 pink is the best for this
with 4-4-4-12 timing1.8v , however its shows 5-5-5-18 1.8v >2.1

Adata ram is 800mhz  locked as i dont think you get a 555 18 option it will be box standard
hope that helps
