Gigabyte GA-MA785GMT-UD2H F9
AMD Athlon II X2 250
4GB (2x 2GB) ram OCZ OCZ3P1333LV4GK replaced with 4GB (2x 2GB) ram Corsair TW3X4G1333C9A
400W Corsair PSU
500GB Samsung HD502HJ Spinpoint F3
Win7 x64
Have been having problems with the above setup. When first set up with the OCZ ram windows was slow to install and would have random BSOD. All memory timings were correct etc as they are set manually. The OCZ showed up as having errors in memtest so I RMAd the ram. Replacement set shows up no errors but still BSOD. I replace this with the corsair ram and still the same problem.
I purchase the above set up again, but still random BSOD. Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi
Did you install the OS in Native IDE or AHCI mode?
-
Your Corsair memory is not on the Gigabyte QVL list. The only Corsair listed there is TW3X4G1333C9A.
I also checked on the Corsair website and they dont recommend them either. The address is here for you to check:

Thanks for the fast reply guys.

I'm sure it was native IDE

Thank you. The gigabyte QVL only list one corsair module which is 1GB in size. There are no approved 4GB sets.
Corsair only seem to recommend 1600mhz ram. I have always thought that as long as the ram was within the limits of the motherboard and ran at SPD settings there would be no problem?
Thanks again

In a perfect world you would be right and that is what the standards are put in place for, but in reality often this is not the case and this is why you need to check for compatibility. It is possible that it isn't the memory that's causing your problem but I would want to cure one possible problem before going on to another.

I have to agree with this, however I am running 8 gig of Corsair RAM that isn't on the QVL and although it is now running fine it was difficult to get working in the first instance and it has become even more of a challenge with the AM3 CPU's.
What slots are you using on the Mobo for your memory?
Have you made any changes in BIOS?
What revision is your Motherboard?
Is your CPU C2 or C3 stepping?

Going on the gigabyte QVL I'm a bit limited on what matched pairs I can use. Is there a way of finding out what other motherboards work well with this ram?

I'm using slots 1 & 2
I went back to defaults when I installed the F9 bios. I kept everything the same apart from the memory settings which set manually as per corsair instructions.
I have a revision 1.0 and 1.1 board.
The current CPU is C2 stepping I'm guessing the older CPU would be the same.

Can you not get the modules replaced with some from the Corsair website's QVL? There are plenty to chhoose from for this board?

If I understand this part correctly you have altered the timings and Voltage for the RAM. In the first instance I would recommend loading Optimized Defaults in BIOS and not making any changes to RAM at all we can do that later.
Are you using the Rev 1.0 or the 1.1 board?

Unfortunately I cant exchange them after 7 days. The only difference from the recommended ram on the corsair site (TW3X4G1333C9DHX) and mine (TW3X4G1333C9A) is the heat spreader.

Partly so. Rather than having set automatically, went to manual settings and using the info on the modules (which were the same as the automatic settings) the voltage was kept the same (1.5v)
Currently using the 1.1 board

OK
Just so we are starting from the beginning can you reload Optimized Defaults in BIOS and reboot without making any adjustments.

Thanks for the help so far. It's appreciated!
Have now set optimised in bios

No problem. :D
Now you have your system set to default, how long is it before you encounter a BSOD?

I shall have to get back to you on that one. It can sometimes go for days without a BSOD then have 5 or 6 all on one day. This is from just general browsing on the net, checking emails etc.
-
OK, I understand.
I had very similar issues but I was running a Phenom X4 at the time, not an Athlon and I am using a different Mobo but I couldn't get it to run at anything other than the BIOS defaults which meant that my 1600 Mhz memory was running at 1333 Mhz. Changed CPU to a new 1090T X6 , same memory no problems!
You say that you are using F9 BIOS. Did you update it to this because of the BSOD's?
-
The only time I've been glad to see the BSOD

Sorry to hear you're having memory issues too. I've had similar issues where memory works initially and fails later. I was using a GA-770TA-UD3 motherboard though.
Run the memory test from memtest.org on your system for at least two hours to confirm the memory is working reliabily. If it is, it could be a driver problem.

The BIOS was updated as the component supplier asked me to.
Well had the PC running for a few days now as have been away. Within the first hour of a cold boot it BSOD. On a warm restart it also BSOD.

For some unknown reason this memory is now showing up as having errors! I shall try an RMA and update this thread on use of the new RAM.

Hi,
Are you running in ganged (Dual) or unganged (single) channel configuration?
You most probably won't get RAM running at 1600 Mhz in Ganged (Dual) Channel mode.
Check this thread for more details: http://forum.giga-byte.co.uk/index.php/topic,2379.0.html Although it refers to different mobo's the basics still apply.

ok, thanks.
Running the ram at its rated speed, 1333Mhz I get errors in memtest and BSOD in windows 7
Running the ram at optimized settings, 1066Mhz, I get no errors in memtest but still BSOD in windows 7 (ram shows as unganged).
I haven't yet tried to run the ram at 1600 speeds.

If you are not using the latest BIOS I would recommend that you update it first.

Thanks but I am using the latest BIOS, F9.

Ok , good. When you boot up does it make any beeps on POSTing?

Just the standard one short beep to show its alive

You say you get BSOD in windows what code does it throw up?

There's quite a few errors. Cant check the most recent ones as the PC is running memtest again, lol.
I can remember seeing IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL on one of the dump files using bluescreenview

When you get the next one please just make a note of it. I know it's a pain with all those zeros etc but it does mean something.

OK, not sure about this but just been doing some double checking on the AMD site and came across this with reference to the X2 CPU's: Type of Memory Supported X2 - Support for unregistered DIMMs up to PC2-8500 (DDR2-1066MHz) -AND- PC3-8500 (DDR3-1066MHz)
Here's a link to the AMD page I found it on: http://www.amd.com/us/products/desktop/processors/athlon-ii-x2/pages/amd-athlon-ii-x2-processor-model-numbers-feature-comparison.aspx
It looks as if the X2's memory controller could be the problem here. Will need to do some more digging but it is an avenue that does need to be looked at.
UPDATE:
OK, this is really starting to p*** me off. Just spent a bit of time trawling AMD's website and the information there is so out of date you wouldn't believe it. They don't even show system building support for AM3 so trying to find any current info regarding CPU/Memory compatibility is like searching for the proverbial needle in a haystack.
Still, my motto is: Never give up; Never surrender! And, in an effort to get some proper answers to the questions regarding the AM3 CPU's, the way they interact with Memory and any real maximum RAM speed issues, I have managed to get hold of their UK address and telephone numbers (luckily they don't hide those away) and I will telephone them on Monday and try and extract the relevant info from them.
Please be a little patient as I don't really expect this process to be quick or painless but, I will do my best.

Managed to take a look at the minidumps. Most recent ones shown below with bugcheck string and code and which driver caused it.

Yeah I too noticed that, but when searching for answers found that other people had been running similar setups to mine without problem (CPU and RAM). But then, even when the ram is run at 1066Mhz speeds errors/BSOD still show up.
I have two of the exact same systems so feel free to take one away to have a play! lol When I went to purchase second identical system the company said at all the components should work fine together. I simply purchased the second lot to swap over any faulty components.
Having just finished memtest running the memory at 1066mhz errors have shown up. To be safe I think I'll RMA these tomorrow!

According to Micro$oft there is a hotfix available for this problem, It only happens in certain hardware configurations. Check here for more details:
