Title: ga-890gpa-ud3h bsod Onboard VGA (HD 4290)
Post by: Rage on July 28, 2010, 08:11:28 pm
Hi,

I've made a similar post on another site's forum so I hope no one minds me posting here as well.

I've recently built a new pc and the problem is when adjusting the resolution or attempting to load a game. Any time I make a change (reduce) the screen turns black and after about 20 seconds blue screens and restarts. The same issue happens if I try and start any game.

My specs:
Gigabyte GA-890GPA-UD3H (rev 2.0)
1 X 2GB Crucial 1333Mhz RAM
XFX 650W XXX Edition
WIn 7 x64
Onboard ATi HD 4290

I wasn't expecting the onboard graphics to be amazing however there is something wrong when it won't even lower the resolution without blue screening.

I'm not into o.c hence why I got 1333 RAM and the part is listed as compatible on the mobo's QVL. I've also ran memtest and it passed although I've not tried it with the dimm in another slot.

I thought at first it was a driver issue however I've updated the GFX driver and chipset drivers to the latest versions with no change. When adjusting the resolution I've tried ATi's catalyst control and window's settings.

At the moment I'm hoping it's something I've got set incorrectly in BIOS but can't seem to find what it would be. There is a gfx setting which lets you pick between UMA and/or SidePort and I've tried all three variations without a change.

I've since tried updating the BIOS and I'm now running with the latest version (FD), I've also tried uninstalling the drivers and reinstalling them but no joy. The next thing I can think to try is installing XP and seeing if it changes anything but can anyone here think of anything I've not done? I keep thinking a setting in BIOS but not sure what I haven't tried. Thanks if you can suggest anything!

Well for a start you haven't got enough memory to run windows 64bit happily let alone games. Try adding another 2Gb ram and then you should be ok. Don't forget the onboard graphics also eat up your memory.

Thanks for your response. If it is as simple as that then I'll be more than happy.

My plan was to get another stick of ram and gfx card out of next months pay so think I will try XP till then.

Probably a good idea. You should really buy memory in matched pairs if you intend to use it in a Dual Channel mode.

Installed xp and that seems to have done the trick.

I'll be getting more ram and a graphics card soon, thanks again!

Glad to have helped. It makes a change to have a nice easy straightforward problem for once.
