Title: Right guys new rig advice! :D
Post by: oggmonster on July 30, 2010, 03:04:16 pm
Hey everyone, will be getting X58A-UD3R soon with an i7 930. I am looking for hopfully a 4.2ghz overclock. I am also going to purchase a noctua nh-d14 as it seems to perform alot better than my TRUE.
I basically wanted to know what RAM would be best to get on that board with those clocks? I want 3x 2GB sticks. I do not wish to overclock the RAM as its just frankly a hassle :P

Hi oggmonster, I am running some 1600 Cosair Dominators and they are brilliant. Ebuyer has a set of 3 for £154. Easy instalation with the XMP setting.

I presume you're about to get Rev. 2.0 of UD3R.

To avoid hassle, it's better to pick one out of the Memory Support List (Qualified Vendors List).
http://download.gigabyte.eu/FileList/Memory/mb_memory_ga-x58a-ud3r_v2.0.pdf

I'm using GSkill ECO 2x2GB (8-8-8-24) for my UD3R Rev. 1.0 and so far the memories work as expected. The best part of ECO series is that it's designed to work at voltage as low as 1.35V. Thus, you will have plenty room (1.65V-1.35V = 0.3V) to play around. The following GSkill ECO 2x2GB is listed in the Memory Support List:

GSkill F3-12800CL7D-4GBECO

Edit: As you need 3x2GB, this model may not be suitable for you. I'm sorry.

Cool will have a look at those options, just that people have been saying this motherboard is fussy when it comes to memory?  ???

Also whats everyones thoughts on SSDs? Was think of also getting a top notch graphics card but not sure if i need top top notch as its only a 1680x1050 display

I use a Corsair Performance 256Gb SSD. It's only SATA2 but it is definitely faster especially when booting. If only the Marvell chip would run like it is supposed to we could get some real perfomance gains. Actually I noticed that this past week Crucial has dropped the price on their SATA3 SSDs. Very nice drive and 128Gb is only £230 now. Was £314.

Right anymore thoughts guys? I'm guessing for a 4.2ghz overclock I will need 1600mhz memory or can i get away with 1333?

Also am still unsure about what GPU to get still. I am also hoping that my 620w corsair modular is still upto the job!

Personally I would recommend the 1600 as it does give you a little more room to move. If it were me I would be going for a 5xxx series GPU. Model depends on your cashflow.
