Title: What Download and Upload speeds do you get?
Post by: absic on August 27, 2010, 10:31:31 am
An area of discussion that I thought might be interesting is......

What Download and Upload speeds do you get?

I am based in the UK where we are always being sold Broadband on the Download speeds but we are rarely told what upload speeds we get. I wondered what others were able to achieve as I really find that uploading is a right Royal Pain in the A***. I have a 10 Mb Broadband package from Virgin Media and here are my figures:

So what do you get? ??? ???

In the interests of getting figures that are comparable it would help if you used Speed Test.net to get your figures. You can test your connection speed here: http://www.speedtest.net/

I am using Blueyonder(Virgin Media) and I am supposed to get 10Mbs.

Generally it is a very stable connection. It is only the upstream speed that hacks me off sometimes.

I'm with Talktalk, don't laugh, they are not all bad it is their relationship with BTOpenreach and the service you get from BTOpenreach is a post code lottery.
This is a good day, if the sun comes out I get disconnects and eventually speeds as low as 150 Kb/s
Last year I had an all out attack on TT, managed to get a new NTE5 socket but it made no difference.

I have a saying about BB in the UK, it is like running high speed trains on Victorian lines but then I think they could do things right in those days.

Bill.

It seems even a pigeon can beat some broadband connections. Check this out at the BBC news website: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-11325452

Interesting report but sad! You tend to forget that not everyone can get broadband when you are so used to using it every day. I bet Outer Mongolians get better served than Brits. ::)

I'm with Virgin and am supposed to get 10MB. It's not the download speed but the uplaod speed that I always find annoying. Why is it so low? ???

The upload speed has always lagged behind the download speed even when we used to use 28K modems and dial up connections. I don't really understand why that should be but it seems to be the case in  most countries.

One of the reasons I actually started this was because I was a little vexed at the slow upload speeds we get in the UK. Maybe it's to stop all those naughty people who like to hare things!  :o

As a matter of interest, when I was last in Japan, I was surprised by the speeds I was able to get there. The upload was actually almost the same as the download speed so I don't know why we put up with such a poor service.

Well it certainly doesn't stop them file sharing does it? As always this sort of thing only hits the genuine people who play by the rules not the lawbreakers.

I noticed before that there are some countries that seem to get a fair speed in both directions. Why we have to be different has always been a mystery. I did read somewhere a while ago that it was to do with them being able to cope with the bandwidth necessary for uploading at the same speed but I can't really see that is a problem.

And you're complaining ;). Frankly, the download speed is alright with me. I don't really need all that much more. The upload speed is pathetic, though.

Obviously it depends on what speed you are supposed to be getting. Are you on broardband or some other connection?
Who is your ISP?
