Title: GA-X58A-UD3R RAID0 SSD SATA2
Post by: BD on September 07, 2010, 03:11:21 am
Hi,

I've built new system with one OCZSSD2-2VTXE60G (R:285MB/s W:275MB/s), ran into a problem, 60g not enouth. So I thought I'de buy a second one and RAID0 them. On reading the manual I have become so confused of which SATA ports to plug these into. Do I put them in the SATA3 6gb/s or the top 6 SATA2 ports, or even the bottum two gigabyte SATA2 ports. Googled and only found SATA3 raid setups.

I had two raptors RAID0 on my old system (SATA1), but seems systems have come along way since then and I have failin behind.

My system storage...

OCZSSD2-2VTXE60G x2 (want to RAID0)
WD 15EARS x2 (one in system for data, second for backup using eSATA on top case 'CoolerMaster RC692KKN2')
WD 5000AADS x1
SATA DVD burner x1

Any help would be great, I've just complete confused meself.... And I'm yet to even try BIOS setup and WIN7PRO64 install :(

Thanks
BD

The SATA3(Marvell) are the fastest ports for a single SSD  or even a pair but it is not advised to RAID them on these ports. If you want to run a RAID array then the Intel ICH10 controller is far superior in speed and reliability. The GSATA ports are probably the slowest out of the ones available. Hope this helps. ;)

Running the two SSD's in RAID0 is still better than having 1 SSD for OS and second for installed programs/games correct??

Yes I would say so. Only don't try to run them on the Mavell SATA3 ports. I would use the Intel ICH10R ports.

6x Intel ICH10R SATA Controllers - SATA2_0/1/2/3/4/5
2x JMicron JMB362/GIGABYTE SATA2 SATA Controller - GSATA2_8/9
2x Marvell 9128 SATA Controller - GSATA3_6/7

So use the SSD on one the 6 intel ports... Put the other HDD/DVDROM on intel as well??

Thanks alot for help. This be me last question hopefully, as long WIN7PRO64 install goes well :)

Sure. I thought that you had two SSDs though?

Sorry. Yes two SSD to RAID0, just wanted make sure putting on othere things on the 6 intel ports not slow it down.

Thanks

Its not going to slow things down theres lots of bandwidth for the Intel ports you should get like 450MB/s~ read with them in RAID 0.

I tested Intel Vs Marvell here, Intel comes out on top for sure in many areas.   Marvell only wins in read speeds due to the SATA 6Gb/s controller, but it is terrible for RAID so you best bet would be the ICH10R
