Dear Sir or Madam!
I'm a computer programmer and when I'm programming I need my PC as quiet as possible when idle so I do not see the point that my recently bought GPU "HD5770 GV-R577UD-1GD" has the FAN's lowest speed set to 35% with such low temperatures:
Can I get a new bios update which would set the minimum FAN speed to 10% or even lower? Else I will have to return the card.
btw. I could modify the bios myself using Radeon BIOS editor but I do not want to lose my warranty for something as trivial as that.
Regards,
Tom

Hello ashrack and welcome to the forum.
You don't say what firmware your card is running presently so it is hard to give an answer.
If you can reprogram the minumum fan speed in the card's firmware surely if you had a problem with the card you could just revert the programming to the original setting.

Hello ashrack and welcome to the forum.
Thanks for the greetings.

Running the following firmware, does this give you any clue?:

If / when I revert the GPU's bios to the original one, are there no hooks in place which would tell the Gigabytes's people that the bios had been tempered with?
-
Yes where it says BIOS version thaty is the firmware for the card. I don't know if it is the latest but if it isn't try updating it.

I really don't know but I can't see any reason for them even looking to see.

where do I go about updating it? Could you give me a link or something?

I also don't see any logical reason but you never know ;)

The link for your BIOS/firmware for your card is here:
http://www.giga-byte.co.uk/products/product-page.aspx?pid=3283&dl=1#bios
The only thing is as far as I can tell the only one there is actually older than the one you are running ???

There is an easier option ( than modifying bios ). I've used it myself recently and it works like a charm.
You can download Rivatuner and modify the fan speed using it. Normally, even with this program, you'd have to use the fixed speed option to go below factory settings but there's a nice guide here:

No idea if it works with HD5770 but I don't see why not. Myself I went with the "Look-up table control mode" and modified most of the entries. Had to save the profile and activate "apply at Windows start up" to make it work properly. That way I got my card ( Powercolor HD4870 PCS+ ) from 39% in idle to inaudible 25% ( lowest value Rivatuner offered ).

that is really interesting:)
I launched RBE on that bios and the settings are all the same.
Have just modified my bios to this:

just got to flash it now

RivaTuner doesn't officially support 5xxx series. Unofficially it is possible with a hack. But still at 25% the fan is still too loud.

Looks good to me. I think I would have ramped up to 100% slightly sooner but that is a matter of conjecture. Should do the job though. ;)

I too would ramp up to 100% sooner, but I guess if Gigabyte's deemed it safe, than who am I to complain :)

Yes fair comment, I guess I am just being safety consious.

it will not update. It throws the following error:
'atiflash -i' gives: Adapter not found
'atiflash -p 0 5770m.bin' gives: Adapter Error 0FL01
Running it from a clean dos 7.1 of USB.
-
I am not sure if it will be of any help to you ashrack but there is a tutorial here: http://forum.giga-byte.co.uk/index.php/topic,2439.0.html

for some reason I had downloaded an older version of ATIFLASH. Have flashed with success now with the latest ATIFLASH.
But it did me no good, since the Ati driver overrides the settings when it loads the GPU driver.
Any workaround there?

I am afraid i can't help you any further. Maybe someone else might know of some workaround. Sorry.

Thanks for your help so far.
Should I write to Gigabyte support by email and explain them my situation? Perhaps they might be willing to help?
-
Yes by all means. Nothing lost. The main trouble with GGTS is the length of time they take to respond and then getting an intelligent answer from them.

That is way I prefer the forum and people such as you.

Thanks for the vote of confidence, I am just sorry that we could help you this time.

Have sent a support ticket to gigabyte.
Upon further investigation I found that the fan is hardcoded to have a minimal RPM of 35%. Even with bios flashing or the use of MSI AFTERBURNER and settings the fan bellow 35% has no effect. But setting it above 35% works without problem.
Also when I manually set the fan to its lowest possible value 35% and running FURMARK for half an hour the max temp was only 70C.
Why had they put such a good cooling solution together only to ruin it by hardcoding the lowest RPM level is beyond me.
I guess I really will have to return the card.
ps. Do you know if this card
http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=3429#ov
is quiet on idle?
-
I really don't know, maybe someone who is running one can answer your question. I would think though that it wouldn't be because from memory yours has dual fans and this one is a single so maybe it has to work twice as hard?

Your memory serves you wrong, sir.
I have the following card with 1 fan:

Oh sorry about that I must be thinking of another member. In that case probably not a lot of difference but maybe someone can let you know for sure.

Browse the net, look for reviews of cards you're interested in. Most of today's reviews have "fan noise" included. Granted, this is often biased but it should tell you enough to know if it's louder than average or not. Generally, looking for ones that have more efficient cooling solutions is best. At least some of them are quieter than reference cards.

Looking at some of the cards with dual fans, they're often louder than single fan designs ???. Aftermarket soultions exempted but most people won't go for them as you're voiding your warranty and paying that little bit more on top of the card's price :-\
If it's any help, the fan on Powercolor PCS+ is quiet in idle on a HD4870 so maybe it'd also be for the HD5770 card. With factory settings it's not all that much louder than the rest of the PC. At 25% it's completely inaudible. A fair warning: under load it can get rather noisy.
Anyway, like I said, I'd look for factory overclocked cards with better cooling. Many of them are quieter than normal cards.

One of the quiestest cards (apart from the silent cooled) is the Sapphire Vapor-X series. They are extremely efficient and quiet. I have had a couple and they are really good only you do pay a bit extra for the benefit.
