Title: Ga ma78gm-s2h v1.0 and phenom II 555 compatibility issue
Post by: green energies on September 24, 2010, 03:25:58 pm
I've upgraded the bios to F12a in order to install a phenom x2 555. During boot up , the bios recognizes the cpu, but after this point,
the computer displays various errors:

corrupt boot files, blue screen of death, lock ups during boot up, etc. Nothing I do, can make it boot up.

In short, is this motherboard compatible with a phenom 2 555?  I thought it was based on the cpu compatibility list.

I've put back my Athlon and everthing came back normal, including starting windows. this tells me that the hard drive and boot files are not corrupted.

Thanks

The Phenom II X2 555 is supported from BIOS F11.
I am sure absic will know if there are any little quirks to do with this pairs compatibility.

Hi there,

Well according to the CPU support list the Phenom ii X2 555 is supported from BIOS revision F11 so you are right in thinking that it should work OK.

Did you use QFlash for the BIOS update or the @BIOS utility? If you used @BIOS I would suggest re-flashing using the QFlash utility as it is more reliable.
When you had completed the update process did you remember to load Optimised Defaults?

And clear the DMI when you do the update. ;)

I assumed that a bad bios flash is a bad bios flash, considering that  everything worked fine.
Bios flashes are so scary that I don't want to do another one unless you absolutely convince me that Q flash will pick up something that @bios didn't ...

I understand your concern and it is always worth being cautious when it come to flashing BIOS. The problem with the @BIOS utility is that the actual "flashing" takes place through the OS and this can lead to errors. With the QFlash utility you are flashing outside of this layer of software so it is much more reliable.

The reason I suggest re-flashing BIOS using the QFlash utility is to make sure that the update has the best chance of success. If, after flashing again, there are still problems with getting the CPU to run then we would need to look at other things that can be causing the BOOT Failure with the X2 555 rather than a bad flash.

And clear the DMI when you do the update. ;)

I assumed that jumping the cmos took care of it. Am I wrong? If so, how does one delete the DMI pool for this motherboard.
Thanks in advance.

You are given the option when updating the BIOS. Just tell it yes when asked.

If you use the QFlash utility you make the setting on the home page, check this image: http://img248.imageshack.us/i/img0284mc.jpg/
It's the first option in the list. You need to highlight it by using the Up/Down arrows on the keyboard and switch between Enable/Disable by hitting the enter key, it needs to be set to disable.

Ok, let's see if I understand:

1. I downloaded the new bios F12A with @bios and kept the same cpu. Everything worked fine.

2. I then change to the new processor and am unable to boot.

Your suggestions:

1. Re-flash  the bios using Qflash
2. clear DMI data
3. replace old cpu with Phenom.

Hope that it'll boot....

Is this correct?
thanks again...

Yes that about the size of it and after the flashing load optimised default settings in the BIOS. Actually the DMI data will be cleared before you actually flash the BIOS.
