Gigabyte GA-P55-US3L is listed as both P55 and H55 chipset.
Is this a misprint or was the chipset changed on later revisions. ?
-
There are two versions of the board. No misprint ;)
-
It's annoying when online shops do not list the Motherboard revision. ::)
-
It's also annoying that they can't tell you what BIOS version it ships with! :P
-
Yes, you would think with barcoding etc that it would be easy enough to know the exact details of anything they had in stock just by scanning it with a handheld scanner.

FOR SURE!!!
With so many new CPU's always coming out, and then not being compatible with the first few shipped BIOS versions, you would think they could print this on the labels.
I know it wouldn't be much help when buying a board online, but it would help a lot when a user gets the board home and their 980X wont start, as we could easily ask "What BIOS version does it say is installed on the label of your motherboard box"
This should be a standard by now!

because of this people often Order boards to find out what version they are and then return them for a refund under the 7 day returns law and online shops just often place them back with the current stock which is annoying as somebody paying full price for a new board gets a customer return thats already been opened so it feels secondhand. :(

Nobody's yet said which board revn. is which chipset. Can someone please explain?
DM said there are TWO versions of this board. Is he referring to the revn. no.. or to one using a P55 chipset and the other using an H55 chipset?
DM?

Right I have been summoned! Yes there are two different varieties of board The P55 and the H55 ranges. The H55 range is newer version of the P55. Both very similar. Probably the best way instead of me trying to describe them is to just provide a link.

I'm afraid I'm none the wiser.
It would appear that Revn. 2.0 uses an H55 chipset. But what about Revn. 1.1 and Revn 2.3? Which chipsets do they use? Is P55 a more recent chipset than H55? Exactly what advantages/disadvantages, vis a vis H55 or P55, are there?
-
No to be fair it was even more confusing than I thought. It would seem some of the P55 boards use the P55 chip and others use the H55. The H55 boards seem to be small form factor ones whereas the P55 boards are full size ATX

Confusing? I'd say!
Even though the model name is always shown as GA-P55-US3L, the actual chipset can vary:-
Board Revn. 1.1 = P55
Board Revn. 2.0 = H55
Board Revn. 2.3 = H55
And they're all ostensibly full ATX. However, that's not altogether the case. The above three measure a little less narrower than full ATX (but not mini or micro ATX). See my recent posting on the matter of the board's physical size. However, most case mounting plates will have standoff positions for that size. Mine does.
Quite a number of UK retailers are still selling Revn. 1.1. As for 2.3, I've yet to find any UK retailer that has them. I don't think 2.3s have been shipped to the UK yet, and may not be for quite some time - probably not until all stocks of 2.0 in the UK have been sold.
As someone who's been wanting to buy Revn. 2.0 of this GA-P55-US3L board for some weeks now, I'm having a really difficult task in locating one that's at least Revn. 2.0 and which will come guaranteed with the manufacturer's seal on the box intact. I've contacted several UK retailers on those two counts and all I'm getting in response from them is complete silence.
I don't think that second lot of links you've given, DM, points to any boards that are anything to do with the GA-P55-US3L. They're completely different boards. However, they do serve to illustrate the constant changing around of P55 and H55 chipsets on these families of boards. It pays to look at the specs very carefully indeed and to research the advantages and disadvantages of the respective chipsets.
It hasn't helped that Intel has also been revising manufacture of some of its i5 and i7 Skt 1156 CPUs (changed stepping).
