I have a GA-965GM-S2 motherboard and everything works fine but the usb ports.
I have a Intel E6600 Quad processor and a HD5750 Radeon graphics card and 4 GB memory.
When I put in a usb stick in a port the stick do light up but there is no response from the computer that it is connected.
And I think have enabled the usb ports from Bios. Windows 7 works fine, as do the graphics cards, sound etc but nothing from
the usb ports. :(
Any help would be appreciated!

Hi and welcome to the Gigabyte Forum.
Firstly you say the drive light up but not if it is actually working or visible in My Computer. We need a little more info first please.
-
Thanks :)
More info like?
I have a Cruzer 8 Gb stick. I have another computer to check that it works and it does.
Then when I put the stick in "this" computer the light inside the stick glows, which means at least it is getting power I guess.
But the computer doesn't seem to recognise the stick as no new drive appears and it isn't reacting as if it was there.
-
headphones are working both at the front and at the back but like I said, no response either fron the front 2 usb ports or the 4 at the back :/
-
I have tried to install a usb pci card and then I can use those usb ports on that card.
But I need that pci slot for my wireless pci card as my graphics card eats up the other pci slot.
-
Sorry for the many responses. When I have my headphones connected to the front and put in the usb stick at the front I can hear this crispy sound which make it seem as it is reacting to something...
-
Hi,
If your USB headphones are working it would point to the fact that the USB ports are functioning OK and the problem is possibly software rather than hardware based.
Has your USB stick been formatted on a MAC by any chance?
What format has it been formatted in, FAT16, FAT32, NTFS?
-
AH, now you misunderstood me.
I am talking about regular headphones, not usb ones.
I have only a usb stick, usb mouse, usb keyboard, usb wireless adapter and a usb external harddrive.
And none of them work.
-
Have you got the USB enabled in the BIOS?
Have you installed the chipset drivers for the motherboard?
What symbol has it got beside USB in Device Manager?
-
Usb is enabled on the motherboard.
The drivers for the usb ports are detected by win 7 right away when I start the computer and have enabled usb in the bios.
What do you mean by symbol beside usb in Device manger? What should there be for symbol?
-
Well if everything is working properly - nothing. ;)
-
Well, I started up the computer and checked.
There is a sub category in device manager called:
Universal Serial Bus controllers
In that category there is written 14 lines.
From the top:
Inter(R) ICH8 Family USB Universal Host Controller - 2830
Inter(R) ICH8 Family USB Universal Host Controller - 2831
Inter(R) ICH8 Family USB Universal Host Controller - 2832
Inter(R) ICH8 Family USB Universal Host Controller - 2834
Inter(R) ICH8 Family USB Universal Host Controller - 2835
Inter(R) ICH8 Family USB2 Universal Host Controller - 2836
Inter(R) ICH8 Family USB2 Universal Host Controller - 283A
USB Root Hub
USB Root Hub
USB Root Hub

Before each line there is an icon of a usb connector. And when I click on each line it says device is working properly.
-
All looks fairly normal to me. Are you trying to connect via a hub or anything external?
-
No, the computer is right now not connected to anything as I have just installed Windows 7 on it and my graphics card.
There are no cables on the motherboard that need to be connected or?
Should think not.
-
I wonder what it could be. If I remove them in windows and disable them in the bios and then enable them again in the bios Win 7 will automatically
find the drivers.
There is power to the usb ports otherwise the stick wouldn't glow.
But "my computer" in win 7 is still as empty as ever :/
-
Well I would connect up the buzzer and the on/off switch but apart from that only the power cables need to be connected.
-
Well, don't you need to have the power cables connected just to start up the computer? :)
Hmm ,what do you mean by " connect up the buzzer and the on/off switch"...?
-
What might have happened for it to be like this?
-
Well you said you had no cables attached to the motherboard. No now I understand after reading your post again. We were at cross purposes.
The ports you are trying to connect to are the ones on the back of the computer, yes?
-
Well, the power cable is connected to the power supply and my DVI cable connected to my graphics card.
Then the audio cable is connected to the motherboard as is my Sata harddrive.
-
Well, there are usb 4 ports on the back and 2 in the front and I have tried them all and none of them is working
-
Well the front ones do need a cable connection to the motherboard but the back ones are hardwired to the board so no problem there. I would think that there is a problem with the motherboard from what you have described so I think you will have to RMA it. :-\
-
To where does the front ones need to be connected to be able to work then?
-
It is just weird that it is only the usb ports that are not working as my regular headphones work both from the front and the back.
Both the usb in the front and back isn't working. I can understand if either the front ones didn't work or the ones in the back, but both... :(
-
That is why I say it is the motherboard. The headphones are connected to a different chip and part of the board from the USB sockets. It is possible that the USB controller is faulty. ;)
-
**** :(
So the USB controllers are the same both for the ports in the front and at the back?
-
Yes. The USB is controlled by the same chip.
-
Damn, just my luck. Well, I still appreciate the help!
-
You are welcome but I was just reading some of your post again and in one you said "My Computer is still empty". Did you mean literally? Do any drives show up?
-
Yes, of course my harddrive and my cd-rom turn up :)
it is just the stupid usb memory stick that light up its abcence. :/
-
Oh, that's ok then. I just thought that maybe I had missed something.
-
Are the chipset drivers up to date?
-
Not really. But that shouldn't really matter, should it?
-
Have you tested with a smaller USB Stick, just wondering if maybe there is some compatibility issue with this larger USB stick because I don't even think 8GB Sticks were made when this board was released.
Are you on the latest BIOS?
