Title: gtx460 wont run dx10 or dx11
Post by: slim1664 on October 11, 2010, 09:44:05 am
Hi all, I hope you can help as i'm now pulling my hair out.

Basicly i bought a new "Gigabyte gtx460 OC 768mb" Saturday to replace my failed 8800gtx. Removed the old drivers the way the Nvidia forum recomend (Uninstall drivers from control panel(or device manager) then safe mode and driver sweeper)). Installed the new card then loaded the lastest drivers from the Nvidia site.

System came on as expected and all was working fine untill i tried to run the "Heaven Benchmark" in either dx10 or dx11 (dx9 is fine) after the title screen came up the screen flashed and i got a "disply driver stopped responding but has been recovered" message in the tool bar.

On the 8800gtx (when it was working!) i could run FSX in dx10 preview mode and all was good but if i try with the gtx460 installed i get the same flashing screen and message. Again dx9 will run fine.

I have made sure my MB drivers are up to date and even to be sure uninstalled and re-installed them. Same with directX, i even downloaded the redist pack and installed that to be double sure. DxDiag says all is well and shows dx11 installed.

I have tryed the beta drivers with the same result and also starting from scratch with the old drivers off the installation disk that came with the card. I even tryed installing the latest downloaded drivers over the cd drivers, just in case, but again, no good.

I cant think of anything else to try so i really hope someone can help me. I'm normally pretty good with sovling problems but i have tryed everything.

System spec:-
OS----Vista x86 home premium sp2 - All updates installed.
MB----Biostar GF8100 m2+se - Latest drivers installed, not the best MB but ran the 8800gtx fine.
CPU---AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 6000+, 3100 Mhz, 2 Core(s), 2 Logical Processor(s)
BIOS Version/Date---American Megatrends Inc. 080015, 10/03/2010
RAM----4gb - Tested, Memtest overnight, fine
PSU----Corsair 550W - Tested, working fine
Sound----Creative SB audigy 2 sz

GPU--- Gigabyte gtx460 OC 768mb - 258.69 drivers, only running in 1280x720 through the dvi to the HDMI on my LCD TV.
Serial number-102901005497
Ver 1.0

Anything else you need to know i'll gladly find out. Any thoughts welcome as i may be missing something simple.

Thanks for your time.

Hi and welcome to the Gigabyte Forum.
We must have an awfull lot of bald or semi bald people on here and I bet the men are not much better  ;D

Funny problem this. I would say the first thing to do is type dxdiag into the run box (available via the Start button) and do the tests to check if it is all working alright.

Hello and thanks, yeah not much hair left now! Not much to begin with but dont tell anyone!

I'm sure i put that in my OP but i guess not ( I new id miss something!).
DxDiag says i'm running dx11 and on the "display" tab all features are enabled and "no problems found".

Well I really can't see what could be wrong ??? Just grasping at straws but have you made sure that you are running the latest BIOS version for the motherboard? And the latest firmware for the GPU?
Absic or one of the AMD people might be able to help more being an AMD platform that you are running it on.

Its a killer isnt it! It SHOULD be working!
Like i say the old 8800gtx could run and did run DX10 fine. Nothing else in the system has changed so i know my system as a whole can run it!

Anychance a problem like this could mean a faulty card? Re there seperate "chips" on the card that handle dx10 and 11?

I updated the BIOS not so long ago when my 8800gtx started playing up, i will try again as running out of options.
I have checked around the Gigabyte site but cannot see any updated firmware or bios for this card.

In that case as far as I am concerned I would say the card must be faulty and you should RMA it.

You know, computers are an awful lot like humans ;D. Sometimes, something just doesn't want to work for no apparent reason :-\.

Just to let you know,

The shop rang me today and said they tested the card and couldnt find anything wrong with it which i thought was odd. They said they would swap it for a new one anyway, again fairly wierd.

When i got to there i wanted a word with the engineer so i could ask him what drivers and what dx modes he tested etc. After He realised i sort of new what i was talking about he admited they hadnt tested the card as they "didint have a machine to put it in"!!

They gave me a new card and when i installed that everything was working perfectly. Thank god! but more importantly thank you Dark Mantis for your help.

Cheers

Yes I figure that happens much more than people realise ::) It just sounds good and looks like they are efficient. Anyway main thing is you got a new card and everything is working again. Just don't forget the forum now your new toy is running ok. ;D

In my case dx isn't working at all, every time when it starts (game, youtube?, dxdiag or other PC tests) my PC hangs.
I have set up voltages in Bios that my RAM is now working on factory settings - no more windows start up problems - but directX is not working :(

Is there something that I can do with it to fix ? (maybe some voltage changing ? or sth in bios? I donno) or just RMA it ? (but I bet my shop will check that GTX460 on their default hardware and everything will work fine - like for example on Asus intel chipset  Mobo no prob there with 460).

Cheers,
Mike

Hi Mike

Well I would say the first thing to do is type dxdiag into the run box (available via the Start button) and do the tests to check if it is all working alright.
If it has problems at least it might point you in the right direction.

You just got to the Start Button/run and type in dxdiag and hit Enter
When the DirectX Diagnostic Tool comes up just click on Run Test

And after pressing that button and green progress bar passes by - should sth happen ? maybe some report ?

On every next page (monitor, sound...) there is note at the bottom "No problems found"

If you are running the 64 bit version of Windows there is the option to check that so just click on the button at the bottom of the homepage.

I forgot that:
-Gigabyte GA-790XTA-UD4
-AMD Phenom II X4 955 AM3 BOX Black Edition [HDZ955FBK4DGM]
-Patriot 4GB DDR3 1600 PGS AMD LLK CL7 Dual (2 x 2GB) (PGS34G1600LLKA)
-OCZ GameXstream 850W
-Windows 7 x64

On the dxdiag window I got only option Run 64-bit dxdiag (at the bottom) - or where you want me to click ?  :-\

That's correct. It automatically runs the 32 bit version as it starts that is the green bar you mentioned .  If you want to check the 64 bit version then you click on the button at the bottom.

I am afraid I don't understand, what other tests were you expecting?  It checks through all the DirectX items and tells you if there are any problems.

Okey, I've downgraded Windows 7 x64 to Win XP 32 SP3 (full format) now.

What I've meant were tests like here with dxdiag DirectX 9.0c that I can run DirectDraw and Direct3D  (they were missing on win 7 x64 dxdiag, that's why I was asking about them :P )

Now what happens with dxdiag (directX 9.0c) - Win XP 260.99 drivers:

Direct3D test proceded fine, no errors, but...
DirectDraw test hung the PC !

After reboot Direct3D hung the PC

After another reboot Direct3D square (hexagon) was moving madly fast on every 3 of 3 tests and DirectDraw test has also succeeded. But after once again Direct3D test began, the PC has hung on very first square image

Well I can only think it's a driver error then. I am presuming that the card is ok otherwise DX10/11 wouldn't have worked alright.

I'm afraid you are right :( and I guess it won't be fixed that fast as I thought.
Thx for tips.
