Title: BIOS Update Failure on GA-MA790FXT-UD5P
Post by: illogical on November 02, 2010, 12:41:45 pm
Oh dear I wish I had read this first, http://forum.giga-byte.co.uk/index.php/topic,2441.0.html  just updated my GA-MA790FXT-UD5P using @bios, machine reboots, makes a nice single beep then nothing, just the splash screen ad infinitum.
So far tried, removing power from PSU-(takes about 90 seconds for all power to dissapate), pressing the CLR CMOS button for 30 seconds.- no change.
Tried getting into QFlash all I get is a black screen with a little purple/blue character in the top left corner of the screen.
Pressing F12, gets me an after post fail message and option to load default or profile 1, neither of these 2 options achieve anything.

Right now I've removed all drives all adaptors except the graphics card, detached all USB devices and plugged the FAT32 formated USB stick in the rear to USB port, pressed END and am sitting posting this message with the little purple sort of running man graphic in the top left corner.

I'm considering swapping the 2 BIOS chips about, but as yet haven't checked to see if they are socketed.
Any flashes-( ::) ) of inspiration much appreciated.

I'm suspecting this is time to sit my new Phenom 1090T on a new board, maybe one which will allow my OCZ RAM to run at it's rated speed of 1800MHZ.

Hi and welcome to the Gigabyte Forum.
Sounds like you have some problems. First thing is to unplug and then remove the battery from the motherboard for at least 10 minutes before replacing and loading optimised BIOS settings.
Post again when you have done this.

You can forget runnning your memory at 1800 speed anyway as the controller on the CPU wouldn't be able to stand it.

Thanks for the quick reply, right now I have to go collect my grandson from Nursery, so I'll remove the battery and PSU cord until I get back, probably about 1 - 2 hours, so plenty for all to be clean.
BTW the RAM has been running @1600 with a Phenom 955BE since I bought the board, that combination would not tollerate raising the FSB by more than 5, the 1090T will let me run the RAM @1800 by increasing the FSB but it drags all the other busses too high anyhow that's not important for now.
Will post again later. 8)

OK been left unpowered without the battery for over an hour and it's still no change from the origional scenario I posted, with the addition of trying to use del resulted in a cmos checksum error loading defaults, I accepted that, it rebooted posted but once again stops at the splash screen. ??? :'(

OK,

The reality is that swapping the BIOS chips isn't very practicable as they are soldered into place.

You can try to kick in the backup BIOS by shutting down the PSU from the wall, then hold down your case power button in and then turn on the power supply button, a few seconds later the board will start, shut off the power supply then.   Then you can turn on the power supply again and power up the board normally and DualBIOS will kick in.

;D Job done all I need to do now is update the BIOS to a current version, Q Flash is only listing floppy A & B as sources, I have no floppy disc, the usb drive is inserted in the outer uppermost USB port, formated FAT32, so I'm either going to need to install a floppy drive and copy the BIOS to that or risk @BIOS again.
Rock and a hard place EH ?

Your USB stick could be recognised as a Floppy Drive.

Have you checked what is on Floppy A or B?

If you have disabled the Floppy Drives in BIOS then your USB Stick could show up as an HDD.

You're guessing correctly I have floppy disabled and it's controller, how do I get Q Flash to scan for other than Floppy drives ?

Did you make sure that your USB stick is plugged in before you started your PC? If not it won't be recognised correctly.

I can't say exactly how it will show up in QFlash as I'm not running your Mobo but on mine it comes up as HDD 0-0 <DRIVE> (http://img14.imageshack.us/img14/9394/img0285cd.jpg) (http://img14.imageshack.us/i/img0285cd.jpg/)

Insert USB pendrive and then go into the BIOS and enable Legacy USB devices and Legacy USB Storage then go to the boot section and set the primary boot drive as USB HDD

See you just beat me there absic but using pictures is cheating ;)

While you are there you might want to sync your BIOS versions also. You can do this by pressing ALT + F12 when booting

and all managed without a camera :P

This is true but you forgot to mention the fact that syncing BIOS using ALT+F12 is more successful if you use a PS2 Keyboard rather than a USB one.
The same goes for any activities in BIOS that you are doing, actually.  ;)

Quite right (unless you have the magic touch) ;)

Using a PS2 keyboard you don't need the magic touch!!!  ;)

And it saves a LOT of frustration!!!  :P

Came home lunchtime, unplugged and removed battery, got back this evening, followed your instruction and everything now works a treat. Thank you so much for your help, in the end my wireless keyboard worked just fine. Next job, raid my 2 sata 6gb drives, I may be back quite soon. Thanks once again,

Well thanks everyone for all your help, sorted problem from 1st reply, After removing power lead and battery for about an hour, replaced battery and lead, powered up, went into Bios, selected Optimized Defaults. Now working as expected. Next I'm going to Raid 0 my 2 Sata 6gb drives so expect more cries of help. Thanks once again, kacee

If these drives are Western Digital Caviar Black SATA3 6GB/s you won't be able to RAID them as both DM and I learnt the hard way.

When you update the BIOS on your motherboard, in reality you only flash one of the Chips. The Back-up BIOS is left alone for obvious reasons, such as a bad BIOS Flash. Over time there can be a large disparity between the versions stored on the 2 BIOS Chips. Most of the time this is not a problem and it is quite safe to leave the back-up BIOS alone but sometimes, if there are glitches with BIOS it can help to synchronise the two.

If you have updated your BIOS and you want to make your Back-up BIOS the same version, then you need to make it do this, as it is not automatic. To Flash your Back-up BIOS with the one you are currently running you need to press ALT+ F12 during Startup.

REMEMBER: this is not essential and carries the same, if not a greater risk than ordinary BIOS Flashing as you could destroy your Back-up BIOS when doing this. and IF IT AIN'T BROKE DON'T FIX IT!!!!

wow, thanks. i do understand , but i can see a real need some times. say your new cpu is not supported by the old bios and you are giving away the
old chip that  used  to work with the old bios. you are free from a nagging thought that you may one day need that chip back.
thank you     k-9

Yes that's right and there are other circumstances but as absic suggests it's not something to be taken lightly because of the risks.
