Title: EP45 Overclocking
Post by: CrazyCanuck90 on November 14, 2010, 11:56:49 am
Is it possible to unlink the RAM with overclocking? I'm worried about overclocking my RAM, mainly because I don't think it can really handle it too well, so it would be nice to be able to just overclock the processor by itself.

Hi and welcome to the Gigabyte Forum.
Yes it is possible but a few more details on your system would be useful first to make sure there is no mistakes.

Hi and welcome to the Gigabyte Forum.

Not sure what details you want, but I'll just list some off that are relevant. I have an E6750 processor, which is currently clocked at 3.4ghz, from 2.6ghz, my motherboard is an EP45 of course, I'm using a Hyper 212 Plus heatsink and my RAM is OCZ Gold PC2-6400 ram.

So how do you go about doing that? I didn't see the options for it, unless I overlooked them.

I need your motherboard's model number (not abbreviation) and revision also what BIOS you are using.

Full name is EP45-UD3L, revision 1.1, http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=3285#ov , and it has the latest BIOS.

Thanks. The latest BIOS full version is F9. Is that what you are running?

Look in your manual on page 40 and it will show you how to do what you want. See below:

(G)MCH Frequency Latch
Allows you to fix the chipset frequency at system bootup. Options for adjusting memory multiplier
below may differ according to the fixed frequency. Options are: Auto (default), 200MHz, 266MHz,
333MHz, 400MHz.

2.66 to 3.4 is not a bad overclock, and I really don't think you will see a great deal of difference going any higher. However after saying that, just how high do you want to go?

F9 is what I'm running, setting the MCH Frequency Latch to 400 doesn't seem to keep it there, it still uses the multiplier.

And to Fatman, I want to be at 3.6-3.8ghz.

You can use either B or D memory multipliers, if you leave MCH Strap at Auto.   If you set that to 333 or 400 you will only have the memory multipliers that correspond with the set strap.

Here are the straps and memory multipliers on each one

But is there a way I can have them unlinked? If my ram is even slowly overclocked(850mhz), I get blue screens.

No, not on Intel, you can only use the lowest multiplier is all.

Why is that? I was able to do it on my ASUS board that died on me.
