Title: Bios Settings for P55A-UD3 using OCZ Vertex 2 SSD?
Post by: riotutbes on January 02, 2011, 10:21:19 pm
New build. Have not installed Win 7 Pro 64-bit yet. Never configured a bios before. Please help me configure bios settings.

My system:
i7 870
16GB G.Skill F3-10666CL9D-8GBRL RAM
Using OCZ Vertex2 SSD for OS/Apps and Samsung Spinpoint F3R for data and backups.

Chanel A and B: 9-9-9-24

Performance Enhance? turbo?

IDE Channel 0 Master: OCZ-Vertex2
IDE Channel 0 Slave: None
IDE Channel 1 Master: Samsung HE103SJ
None thereafter....

Should I load optimized or fail-safe defaults?
Standard CMOS Features - any special configs?
Advanced BIOS features - any special configs?
Integrated Peripheals - any special configs?
Power Mgt Setup - any special configs?
MB Intelligent Tweaker - any special configs?

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Hi and welcome to the Gigabyte Forum.

You are not asking for much are you?  ;D

I take it that you have 4 x 4GB memory modules?
If so I would start off by just installing two of them in the white slots for now.

Load the Optimised BIOS Defaults.

You should be able to leave most settings at auto for the moment.

Are you planning to use IDE or AHCI for the SSD and HDD?

Thank you for the quick reply.

I would like to use AHCI for both the OCZ SSD and the Samsung HDD. I have not researched this thoroughly but a quick search suggested that the latest firmware update for the OCZ SSD works with AHCI and may not work with IDE. I presume that traditional HDDs (like my Samsung) work best with AHCI?

How do I configure AHCI...I noted that the CMOS screen shows IDE for both SSD and Samsung (is it a simple matter of changing this?). I also noted AHCI choice somewhere else but am at work and can't recall exactly from memory.

To install Win 7 I read that it is best to disconnect the 2nd HDD (used for data in my case) until I have installed the OS. Is i t OK to unplug the psu and sata cables from the HDD or do I need to do something in bios first?

Sorry for such a comprehensive 1st post. If you have any "must change" bios settings--aside from tweaks that are largely a matter of personal preference--I would be grateful for your expert advise.

Thanks

There are no special bios settings for a single ssd as a as I know, probably better putting it on AHCI rather than ide.  I have the same motherboard as you and have setup 4xvertex in raid0 and all worked out well.  There are a lot of win7 tweaks for an ssd which will improve performance, let me know and I will post a link.
