Title: 890GPA-UD3H - has anyone managed to get USB 3.0 to work?
Post by: gruffalogill on February 09, 2011, 06:49:40 pm
I have searched - but so many people put "USB3" in the title of the thread as part of the motherboard name that it 's not very helpful.

New build - 890GPA-UD3H running Windows 7 64 bit - all updated, latest "Renesas" driver installed.

Kingwin USB3 enclosure with WD 320Gb drive inside and blue USB 3 cable. When I plug it into one of the USB 3.0 ports I get the Windows pop-up that says "This device could work faster if you plug it into a USB Super Speed port"

I've tired uninstalling/re-installing the NEC contoller, tried the old driver and new driver but still get the same message.

Does anyone if this is simply a compatibility issue with the Kingwin enclosure or am I doing something wrong.

Grateful for any advice  :)

Hi

There have been several people I know of through the forum who had problems but got the USB3 working after minor problems. Most of these were on the Intel platform but that is probably just because I notice them more being the Intel Moderator.
I don't recall anything in particular to do with the Kingwin enclosure specifically.

Thanks. I did find an Anandtech article that found a USB 3 problem early on - funnily enough Gigabytes response was that Kingwin enclosures were fine!
Looks like I'll be taking advantage of Bestbuy's return policy to try a few different drives/enclosures out  :D

I do know that the Buffalo enclosures/drives work ok so maybe you could try one of them first.

OK, slight update. I can confirm that the Seagate Goflex USB 3.0 Desktop Adapter appears to work - transferring 5Gb of small files at 69 MB/s which is more than twice as fast as USB 2.0 transfer.

If anyone is interested, it's this item

but I got an Open Box for half the price. This item comes with AC adapter so you can use 3.5" drives too. Seagate also do a simple cable for 2.5" drives which is around $20.

There are many more of these types of devices appearing on the market now and hopefully with them being more plentiful the prices will drop.

Anyway glad you managed to find something to fit your needs. ;)
