Title: GA-890GPA-UD3H rev2.1 3GB bios
Post by: wizardB on March 21, 2011, 04:08:19 am
When are we going to see a bios that will support 3GB+  hd and the Bulldozer processor for this board revisions ?

Hi

I think that a BIOS/EFI hybrid will be available shortly to enable the use of larger disks etc, but I understand that Bulldozer is going to require a AM3+ board. I am sure absic the Moderator of the AMD section can give you more information on this.

Not sure when updated BIOS will be coming along, I guess it will depend on when AMD release their new CPU's and how quickly Gigabyte can test them.

My understanding of the new FX (Bulldozer) Processors is that you will need a motherboard with an AM3+ socket and I have noticed that Gigabyte have recently been updating some of their models with this socket. Check here: http://forum.giga-byte.co.uk/index.php/topic,4819.0.html

Asus has offered a bios upgrade for their AM3 boards that will support Bulldozer I think its an AM2/ AM2+ thing it looks like the 880 and 870 chipsets can support it too!

You might like to check out this article: http://www.xbitlabs.com/news/cpu/display/20100826225852_Desktop_Bulldozer_Processors_Will_Require_New_Platforms_AMD.html

It is a little old now (August last year) but I haven't found anything newer that contradicts this but it seems as if the new FX (Bulldozer) Processors will need an AM3+ Socket to release its full potential. As I stated earlier Gigabyte have started updating certain AM3 boards with the new AM3+ Sockets and  the AM3+ socket will take AM3 CPU's.

Came across this article: http://hothardware.com/News/Mud-In-The-Water-Asus-Claims-Existing-Boards-AM3-Compatible/  this morning that you might also like to check out as it seems ASUS might not be telling the whole story when it comes to the new FX Bulldozer processors.

I lifted this quote from the article:

At this point we're guessing that Asus' is referring to future Phenom II-based products that will launch on Socket AM3+ rather than anything Bulldozer-related.

The lack of any real information about FX Bulldozer, AM3+ sockets does make things tricky and it is a bit of a minefield at the moment.

The only thing I know for certain is that the new AM3+ Sockets are being fitted to some of the Gigabyte motherboards. This tells me that a simple BIOS update is not the solution and a new socket is going to be required to be able to run the new processors when they come along. This has been my understanding all along, that the FX Bulldozer processor will be AM3+ and that they have an extra pin. This would mean they won't fit in an AM3 Socket but that the current AM3 CPU's will fit in the new sockets.
