Hi all!
Just wanted to know if anyone here has tried Kaspersky's PURE Internet Security yet.
Also, what is the best Antivirus/Internet Security that you have found so far?
I am presently using Microsoft's Security Essentials [MSSE] and I am happy with it because I've never had a problem with it.
I also have been given free copies of the following types of Antivirus/Internet Security and was wondering if any of them are better than the MSSE:
Norton 360
Symantec NIS
BitDefender Total Security
Webroot
Trend Micro
Panda
Etc.
Some years ago, after massive trouble with Norton, I promised myself to never ever use it again. But I have seen some recent benchmarks of the Norton that were shockingly strong in the areas of small amounts of system resources, false positives, etc.
Can we get some comments/benchmarks on these various antivirus/internet security options please?
I have been looking at this website and found it very interesting but I am not sure how accurate these people are:
http://www.av-comparatives.org/images/stories/test/summary/summary2010.pdf
And F-Secure is almost unheard of in the circles I fly in...
In fact, F-Secure is not even found on the top ten list here: http://internet-security-suite-review.toptenreviews.com/
Please give me some suggestions friends!

Hi Soar,
I have never tried Kaspersky Pure as I have always been happy with the KIS version and somebody kindly donated the latest version with a years licence and it always seems to do the job without getting inthe way. ;)
I have the same feelings as you regrding Norton. Swore I would never use it again many years ago but it does get good reviews now. I still don't think I will change though as I have still seen people that have had problems with it.

Thanks DM. How about this F-Secure? Have you heard of it before?

I tried it years ago and was unimpressed with it but I had no real negative experience as such. It was more for business use as far as I remember.

Hi Soar,
never used Kapersky but I too was a victim of Norton several years ago and also swore I would never use it again. I then went off on a search for the AV solution that really ticked the major boxes: Quick to start, Effective, Regular updates that didn't take ages to download and install, Small PC footprint, etc. I have tried a lot of different solutions but the one I have stuck with for the past 5+ Years has been ESET Nod32.
Norton does appear to be better than it used to be, it also seems to run faster as well but I still wouldn't use it. The same goes for Panda, a company I once rated very highly but who have, I feel, let things slide over the past couple of years.
Until recently I thought I would be staying with Nod32 but a couple of things have made me rethink my options. I too am running Microsoft Security Essentials on one of my laptops and I have been very impressed with its speed and also its effectiveness. Of course, to use this software you have to have a legitimate copy of the OS so some user's may not find this an option. But, I really do feel that this is one particular solution that Microsoft have got right and I have already switched most of my family over to this solution.
As many different options for system protection as there are on the market Soar, you will get as many different opinions of which is the best. If you are looking for a free option, are running a Microsoft OS, then I would definitely say go for Security Essentials from them. If you are looking to pay for a licence then I would say go with the one that you feel happiest with and that offers you the best solution.
(ps If you avoid sites such as Madam Fifi's den of iniquity you probably won't need to run an AV programme on your system but, you will almost certainly need some other sort of protection!) :D
-
I would have to agree with absic when it comes to Panda. I used it for a couple of years while I was living in Bulgaria where it was considered the Mutt's Nuts, but it went downhill and I switched to Kaspersky.
-
Alot of companies will run certain tests which makes their AV look the best. I ignore all these "such and such performed better" graphs etc. On personal expierience I would say Eset Smart Security all the way, whilst running manual scans with malwarebytes + Spybot search and destroy.
If you don't want to pay for an AV then Microsft Security Essentials works pretty well.
-
I would certainly agree that Spybot Search and Destroy is a brilliant tool. There is not much that gets past it.

Deffo :) IF something does get past it, then Combofix is a BEAST of a tool :) They say that you should only use it with supervision of someone on a malware forum. However i've used it 100's of times with no issues (obviously make sure you've backed up data first ofcourse!)
-
Only trouble is it only runs on 32 bit XP.
-
The latest version runs on pretty much all of them.
Windows XP (32-bit only)
Windows 2000 (32-bit only)
Windows Vista (32-bit/64-bit)
Windows 7 (32-bit/64-bit)
But yeah no support for 64bit XP.

Oh right I remember it as only XP.

He is just can't help himself! :'( :'( :'( Hurt my feelings now.
Thing is with most of these well known AV programs they all work quite well will stop probably around 97% of attacks so it really just boils down to personal prefference.

Ogg,
I have heard only good news about Eset's AV. I think you are referring to the Nod32 or something like that?
I too use the malwarebytes from time to time and it is excellent. I have never tried that Spybot search and destroy but I will give it a shot!
Thanks,

Combofix has helped me locate and remove trojan horses on my relatives computers more than once! You are right, it is very effective!

Absic,
Thanks for the insights! Yes, all my OS's are perfectly legitimate [Microsoft gave me free copies when I went to their "launching events" of each OS]. It was actually very nice of them. They sent me an invitation to attend these conferences. Then they provide a wonderful breakfast, presentation, and even lunch! Afterwards, as you leave the door, they gave each attendee a free coply of Windows 7 Ultimate. I think in the last conference they were trying to undo the damage caused by the premature release of Windows Vista. Anyway, I have attended each of their conferences and received free OS's now for years. Thanks Bill!
The ESET Nod32 has many professionals here in the USA totally sold on their product, so they must know what they are doing and they must do it well!
I avoid Madam Fifi's dens of iniquity simply because I would like my mind to work well. Nearly every serial killer in the USA in the last 20 years had a terrible addiction to porno...
But you are right...I have heard those sites can cause untold numbers of infections on computers...not to mention, infections of the mind and desires...hehehehehehe
Have a good one!

Point well taken...
But...Kaspersky slowed my browser to a crawl for months before I finally figured out what was happening...
It is no longer on my list...
So sorry DM!
I am sorely tempted to try the Norton 360, but I still have a bad taste in my mouth from years ago when you could not even uninstall it after installing it on your system >:( >:( >:( My ears are still red!

No problem Soar. As I said we all have our favourites. I would change tomorrow if I had problems with it though.

I'm using Avira's free AntiVir and I've been more than happy with it on both XP and Windows 7. Occasionally I'll also run Spybot's little program but hardly ever something manages to get through AntiVir & Outpost's firewall. Been using these 3 for a few years now and they're solid. Outpost Firewall isn't the most resource aware firewall out there but it's very user friendly.

BTW'er,
Hi again! Yes, I have heard good reports about Avira's AV too. Thanks for the input and for sharing! 3-5 years is a totally great report!

Eset Nod32 is purely an AV, Eset Smart Security is an AV, firewall + build in spam filtering for email clients like outlook.

Am at work so thats a screenshot of the bussiness edition, at home am obviously using the home edition :)
Edit: I must have read your post before you changed it Soar, but yes I am happy. Use it at work and at home + really have no complaints. I've found their support to be brill aswell.
But like has been said, alot will come down to personal preference at the end of the day :)

A nice clean interface anyway. Not cluttered with unneeded rubbish like some.

Yes, that is a clean and simple interface, easy to read and navigate. Nice choice!

Nod32 is awesome! I have never had any problems with it.
Just remember to keep it updated though! (not a problem if it is automatic). My girlfriend managed to somehow get a horrible trojan on her hard drive recently with Nod32 installed. Having to reinstall windows (tried multiple removal programmes, removed stuff from the registry too but it keeps coming back - this seems the easiest way to get rid of it entirely!), and this stupid memory stick just doesn't want to boot!

I tend to use a suite of apps, you don't have to have them all running on start hogging resources, Personally I have Norton 360 running 24/7 on 4 home machines (Me,wife, kids) but I highly,Highly recommend "Super Anti-Spyware Free Version".....it really picks up what all the rest miss consistently, Hope this helps!

Thanks for the info. I will definitely give the Super Anti-Spyware Free Version a try!

Yeah SaS is also a good antimalware tool. Remeber to stop it starting on the Windows startup as it can slow things down a tad. Just means you have to run it manually (which i prefer tbh)

I downloaded SaS and ran it. It picked up 4 minor issues and repaired them. Nice software!
Thanks again!!

There are quite a few smal programs like that which are worth running every so often as well as your usual anti-virus suite. Never hurts to have a "belt and braces" approach to these things.
-
I used to use avast free which I was quite happy with, and it is still on my sons PC but I thought I would try adaware (I know I used to just think it was a spyware cleaner) http://www.lavasoft.com/ ...anyway I tried the free version, then after a few times of loading it up it gave me a message saying 12 months of Pro for £7.29 so I got it as I had a bit of money in my paypal, then when I bought it I got another message saying 'like us on facebook for another 3 months free' lol
15 months ad-aware pro for £7.29 is alright to me! :)
I also use:
McAfee site advisor browser plugin - free
McAfee security scan plus - free (bit like the old McAfee stinger)
Housecall is also a good free online scanner

I have been watching this thread for a while now. I was going to post but never got around to it until now. I have never used Kaspersky of any kind but I have had the misfortune of having to remove it from several PC's over the years. IMO its as bad or worse than NAV or NIS was in the past. Either the uninstaller fails or it works but leaves so much crap around some other security programs either refuse to install or will not work correctly. From what I see a clean windows install would be easier in the long run as I have spent many hours cleaning up after Kaspersky. The programs them selves seem to work good otherwise though they seems to slow PC's down. More so on lower end PC's.
As far as what program is the best, well what ever works good for you is the best. Myself I use Avast 6 IS on my three PC's. I like the GUI very much and I find it does not adversely effect system performance. When I work on friends and relatives PC's that are in need of a security product I recommend Avast 6 IS or Avast 6 Free. I also use and recommend SAS and or MBAM as additional manual scanners. Layered protection is the only way to go as no product gives 100% protection. I also use and recommend using Firefox with the NoScript extension over IE. Spybot SD was once a great product but IMO it has fallen behind over the years. The resident protection can cause serious problems with some security programs. Spybot SD can also f'up windows if it is uninstalled without first undoing the changes it made before removal of the program. Spybot SD 2 may fix these issues? I also agree ComboFix is a great tool when nothing else works.

Pierre,
Me too! MSSE has been flawless in its protection of several computers I have built. I like the price too: FREE!
I do use System Mechanic 10 for other clean up issues and it too has worked well.
