Title: USB 3.0 on GA-X58-UD7
Post by: brum on April 25, 2011, 10:24:10 am
I have been running a WD Mybook USB 3.0 backup drive with no problems for many months.  I recently installed a Vertex 3 SSD on a SATA III port and all of a sudden my Mybook only runs as if it is on a USB 2.0 port.  Any suggestions?

Hi

The problem you are facing is that both the SATA3 and USB3 share the same bus and so affect each others speed. This sounds like it is impossible to cure but in your case that is not a factor. You have installed your SSD  on the Marvell SATA3 port thinking it is the fastest on your motherboard. In reality this is not the case , the Intel ICH10R  southbridge ports are faster and so I would recommend you resite it on one of those. You will then get your USB3 speed back. ;)

Won't I cause the Vertex drive to drop down to SATA II speeds?
What if I buy a PCI board with USB 3.0 ports?

A new card would be another option . You are not getting SATA3 speeds now though through the Marvell and it doesn't transfer TRIM commands.

Your best option is to buy a new SATA3 card and carry on using the USB3 onboard.
