Title: X58A-UD3R SATA Questions
Post by: CaseyJ70 on April 26, 2011, 09:13:56 pm
Just a quick question regarding this board's SATA ports.  I know that the Intel ports are preferred, as the Marvel controller is basically crap.  Right now I have my WD Black 1TB plugged into port 0.  Where is the best spot for my optical drive?  Does it matter?

Also, I am having trouble installing the intel SATA driver from Gigabyte's website.  Whenever I try and install it an error comes up saying that I don't meet the requirements.  Any advice?  Is it essential to install the Intel drivers?

Thanks.

Hi and welcome to the Gigabyte forum.

You have done the correct thing by installing the Black on the bottom SATA2 port. Is the controller mode set to AHCI ?

The optical drive I would put on the Marvell controlled port as it will quite happily manage that and you can set the controller to IDE mode.

When you say you are having toruble installing the Intel driver are you referring to the chipset drivers ? If so i can't see why they should present a problem.

I'm having trouble with the SATA driver actually.  The one on Gigabyte's website.  Also, I'd rather just disable the horrible Marvel ports in the bios.  Is there an issue with running the PATA drive on the ICHR10 too?  If not what port is best?

If your referring to the Raid drivers or f6 drivers for ICH10R everybody keeps telling me Windows7 does not require them as there already in the operating system and RST (The new matrix raid) seem to run without f6 install.....if your using the GSATA ports for raid they will require drivers prior/during OS install, and the Marvell.........Do you dare!....save your self a lot of frustration and kicking the dog, there OK for optical or singe drives ....even the Gigabyte install disc does not have the true Marvell drivers in the install folder.... there generic ACHI....I think!

I wouldn't try running PATA and SATA drives on the same motherboard as this seems to be a recipe for disaster. Either one will work fine but they don't seem to like being mixed. For the cost of a replacement optical drive I would swap it over mto SATA as well.

Sorry Dark, I meant SATA.  Dunno why I was thinking of PATA.  Is it fine for a SATA optical drive to be running on the ICHR10 too?

Sometimes it can cause problems not because it is an optical drive but because of the way the drive works. I always recommend putting it on a seperately controlled port where possible.
