Right im wondering which to upgrade first my GPU or move to SSD
I will be doing both eventually just wonding which to do and what to get?
XFX HD5770 (current GPU)
160gb Hitachi "HDT721016SLA380" (Current HDD)
Main reason is had these for a few years now and i think im overdue Plus i wanna keep up with and show off to my LAN Party Group :)
Your suggestions are appreciated
-
I'd say get an SSD first, you'll see an immediate improvement to the way the OS loads and runs.
-
To tell the truth the vid card is not too shabby.....If you can stretch that far, why don't you keep both , check your board in the compatibility list at OCZ and get a PCI-E "RevoDrive x2 100gb for your boot drive...........out of the box I have 600+ MB/S write and 800MB/S read.....Just a thought!
Aussie Allan
-
Agreed! Get the SSD or Revodrive first. You will see far more benefit from that than a GPU upgrade as your graphics card is ok even if it isn't top end.
-
right so an SSD is the unanimous decision.
Windows loading time isnt an issue for me seens as the second i push the on button i wander downstairs and make a brew.
so it will help better when gaming and loading my DJ and music editing software? thats the main thing for me really
-
Just make sure that you set it up properly and move your swapfile onto the other drive etc.
-
And now Mr Mantis is speaking russian
im that well versed in procedures
so im afraid your gonna have to talk to me in "idiot" ha ha
also would a vertex 3 be feasable i think the revo x2 is just a touch out of the price range :)
-
I think he means to move the pagefile to the mechanical drive, as this will consume read/writes and SSDs are only so durable. Although I have heard from other users their pagefile doesn't eat too many cycles up, but this will vary on system usage and amount of RAM (and you have 12GB so you may even be able to turn it off!)
Vertex 3 is the next best option after pci-e based storage! I believe it should be very easy to install, Windows 7 should allign the partition correctly and you will be running in no time! Vertex 3 is the fastest Sata SSD on the market currently (for the consumer at least), the majority of applications will open almost instantly and boot times will probably be cut by at least half!
EDIT: That motherboard doesn't have SATA 3 ports right? (rev 1.0) That means it will bottleneck the Vertex 3 by quite a bit, but should still be night and day versus your old drive!

Just in case!.....I'm seeing a lot of £400 to even £460 out there for RevoDrives x2........SC_N .co._k have them in stock for £318 inc...I know ...I brought one!!!

Nazdrave!
Yes as Badbonji sadi I was talking about your pagefile/swapfile for Windows howver if you have over 6GB of memory then you don't need to run one at all and can disable it. Control panel/System/Advanced Syatem Settings/Performance-Settings button/Advanced/Virtual Memory/Change button
@Allan
That is a good price for a Revodrive X2 from Scan. ;)

i thought the rev 1 did have sata 3?? or am i wrong as usual
in otherwords sata 6Gbs isnt sata 3?
so id be better gettin a sata 2 SSD?
im sorry for sounding so dense but its been a long day and brain has started to go to mush ha ha
-
Well this could be a world's first but unless Gigabyte released 2 versions of version 1 Mobo GA-X58A-UD7 (Rev 1) it in fact does have SATA3 (6GBS)
Holy hell Batman.....DM is Human! :o

I can verify that I am indeed human, although there are times when I wish I weren't! :'( However I think you misunderstood what I said. I didn't agree with Badbonji that the motherboard has no SATA3 ( I am using the same mobo as we speak ) just about the swapfile/pagefile.
The Vertex3 is a very nice and fast drive that you could use but even though you have SATA3 it is on the Marvell 9128 chip controller and it fails to work properly in SATA3 speeds. It actually performs slightly slower than you Intel ICH10R Southbridge controller chip which is SATA2.

I stand naked and corrected again.....You should have been a Lawyer ... hahahah.... Brings back memory's of my father... "Allan, I have Many faults, but being wrong is not one of them"

Sorry about that! I looked at a product page on a random shopping site and it didn't state anything about sata 3, just sata 2 ports!
-
That is totally understandable as more often than not these retailers don't get the copy right. All too often the data they provide is in error. Best to go to the manufacturer.
-
FYI, I just replaced my 80 gig Intel X25-M G2 with a 120 gig OCZ Vertex 3 MI, see sig. I tested the drive on the Marvell SATA III and ICH10R SATA II controllers and ended up using the Intel SATA II controller. The Marvell's sequential reads/writes were faster but the ICH10R SATA II controller has better random read/writes and is more consistent and just felt snappier. Some might say why get a SATA III drive and run it on a SATA II controller. IMO why buy an out dated SATA II drive unless your looking to save money in the short term. I will be building a new PC in the next year or so and the Vertex III should be up for the task.
Should you upgrade your video card or get an SSD first? If the games you play are performing good enough for you go for the SSD. If not get a better GPU.
Bill
-
That agrees with my testing Bill as far as the Marvell and Intel controllers go. The Intel are just a better feeling altogether and certainly more reliable.

Hi Soar,
Yes the C400 is the same as the M4 which is how it is better known now it has been launched.
I haven't been able to personally try it out as Crucial was short of review models but I am hoping to look at it in the future. I was discussing it with Lsdmeasap and apparently it wasn't as much of an improvement over the C300 as was expected. They have made a change to the firmware which has increased the random read/write speed I believe but apparently this could have been done to the C300 model anyway.

Right well been having another scout around and am leaning towards the vertex 3 max iops
http://www.scan.co.uk/products/120gb-ocz-vertex-3-max-iops-edition-25-sata-6gb-s-ssd-read-550mb-s-write-500mb-s-75k-iops (http://www.scan.co.uk/products/120gb-ocz-vertex-3-max-iops-edition-25-sata-6gb-s-ssd-read-550mb-s-write-500mb-s-75k-iops)
although the revodrive x2 is brilliant i just dont think 100GB will be enough for me
120GB (although of course id like more) seems a little more justifiable for the price tag.
I know my sata 3 ports arnt the best however im sure the kinks will have been ironed out by the time i upgrade whenever the next sockets arrives :)
Do people agree or am i taking a step back?

It is a personal thing, choosing Hardware!
I like you, had my reservation as to the apparent lack of much storage on the RevoDrive x2 but OOOOOOOH! those speeds were like honey to a bee!
In reality the OS comes to about 50-55Gb depending on stripe size you use leaving a bit under 40Gb for your most used toys, mind you I have probably another 50Gb of programs stored on another 500Gb disc (Seagate Momentus XT) that seems to supply my with the program I click on all the same , albeit not as quick but still pretty snappy.......if you look at it this way , it doesnt matter about your present SATA ports, you could even have SATA I because the Revo uses a PCI-X slot, outperforming even SATAIII at the moment.
It's a Personal thing , but I'm so glad I went this route

I think on hte whole a lot of users worry too much about the size of the boot drive. Here speed is more important than size (but don't try and tell the wife that!) as long as it holds the operating system and a few choice programs etc. All the rest should be on a large data storage drive. This makes everything easier from making an image of the OS to defragging and backing up.
-
How about this instead??

How are you going to connect it to your computer, as in will your board support it at speed.......OCZ is also bringing to market a 4-port HSDL card with a RAID controller on board ($69 MSRP). You’ll be able to raid four IBIS drives together on a PCIe x16 card for an absolutely ridiculous amount of bandwidth. The attainable bandwidth ultimately boils down to the controller and design used on the 4-port card however.........This is where the ultra high end enthusiest market may be heading, PCI-E for OS storage that is............four IBIS in Raid0.........where talking 2TB read and write speeds......if you have the pockets
OR
You can look at OCZs RevoDrive x2 PCI-E card now that fits into just about any board ......all it needs is a free X4 PCI-E and up for 620Mb/s write and 825Mb/s read right out of the box for the same money
Aussie Allan
-
Having just got hold of one of these OCZ Revo x2 drives that Allan is talking about I can confirm what he says with some reserve. I get more or less the figures OCZ advertises the drive at which are 740 MBs read and 680 MBs write but I might be able to tweak a little more out of it when I get a bit more used to the intricacies of the setup.
It certainly is an easy and fast performing solution for anyone in the market for such a drive.
-
If you want some more info of where I think the industry is going as far as storage......Here's why!
And a RevoDrive X2 stats out of the box with no tweaking
Hears the link if you want to read more............ http://www.ocztechnology.com/hsdl .....Enjoy!

Very pretty charts! I do like big numbers like that. ;)
-
i understand where your coming from however im unsure as to weather the revodrive will fit on my board i know Dark Mantis has the same board however he watercools and i dont so im using the huge heat spreader which pretty much hides both ports (bad design in my eyes) just want to be 100% it will fit or will i have to clock back to stock speeds and remove the spreader
-
Don't really understand that one, considering you already have a GPU set on the board.........the revo sits underneath the GPU in slot 2 or any slot that is at least X4 PCI-E ::)

Guys,
After reading your raving reviews on the OCZ Revo x2, I decided I definitely wanted one until......
Looking at the PRICE!
$400 for a 100GB SSD? My goodness...that is nearly more than it cost me for my entire 2500k build!
After reading the price at New Egg, I almost needed CPR.
How can you justify paying so much for such a tiny, eeny, weenie, SSD?
The only way I could afford such a price is if I took the 65 year old gold fillings out of my wife's teeth and pawned them at the local pawn shop, and she definitely would not allow that!
DM, does money grow on trees in the UK, or is someone missing their gold fillings?

There was a man, who negotiated with a dentist, ... to get the price for a deep filling as low as humanly possible, ... after half an hour of whittling down the price of all the extras like sterilized equipment, Local anaesthetic ect..........they finally came to a figure they where both happy with, when offered a Tuesday 10:00am appointment the man said.........."I'll make sure the wife's there on time"
" Do it while she's asleep "
Yes Soar they are pricie.........cutting edge..........We all have to make Sacrifices to get what we want.........I had to sell some of my wife's Jewellery

Alan, you are again in top form! You always make me laugh with your great humor. Ok, but how can I remove the gold fillings if she is a very light sleeper?

Valium + Scotch......the cost will be worth it!.... ;D
Serious though......just like anything in the PC field.........prices will come down dramatically when someone else enters this market.
Aussie Allan
-
Hi Soar,
Yes it is a lot of money and I must admit to being on a knife edge for a while trying to decide whether it was worth it but speed caught up with me in the end and I just had to have one. The wife still hsn't noticed the gaping hole in our back account!
-
This did not come from me!...........when the monthly statement comes in.........scan the DOC into PDF writer, fudge the figures and reprint :o
This should get you about one more month to live!
Aussie Allan........Revos are worth impending death!
-
You wouldn't say that if you were married to my wife! Being Japanese, she has developed some very painful and slow methods of killing, discovered by watching Japanese game shows! :P
She threatens me with these if I don't give her a receipt for buying a packet of mints from the corner shop!!
Faking a bank statement...... I dread to think what she would do to me..... The RevoDrive will just have to wait..... I'm a coward! :-[
-

Aussie Allan
sorry was under the impression it only fitted in the small PCI slots under the northbridge cooler on my board
-
Not a problem, common misunderstanding with the contacts spigot so short.......I'm trying to find out if you can raid them with so many spare slots on the board ;D
Aussie Allan
-
I think that you get to a point of diminishing returns if you try to add any more Revos. The only thing that would be worth doing is adding more ML NAND chips to give a higher capacity which can also increase write speed a little.
-
Working on it ;)

Keep me informed please on that front Allan. ;)
