Some advise please , running the above board with F8 bios and noticed in Win 7 my Marvell driver is at 1.0.0.1027 , i see that there is 1.0.0.1051 ( number could be wrong but newer ) , will there be any issues upgrading to this or is there a reason Giga have an old version still up . Need to check first as i have my os hanging from it ! .

Hi
As long as you are sure that the driver is the correct one for that chip (9128) i can't see a problem. I would still doubt that the SATA3 will work properly but it might help with the stability if nothing else.
Where did you find this update ?

I use this version 1.0.0.1051 with WINXP no problem
But with the last version 1.2.00.1002 i cannot ( possible WIN7 version only ) ???

Also thats a little worrysome Pierre as i was about to install 1.2.0.1002 ( latest ) myself after finding it looking for 1.0.0.1051 . according to the notes it is for Xp , what issue's were you getting ? .

Ok , thanks i'll skip those for now then :) .
As above i'm on 1.0.0.1027 , did you notice any changes going to 1051 ?
-
*
Marvell release absolutly not infos , sorry
Secret infos ???
Pierre
-
Ok thanks , i'll go with 1051 and see if its any better .
-
Ok , so i installed the 1051 driver and noticed no speed difference at all compared to the 1027's ( as measured with Crystal disk mark ) in either IDE or ACHI mode . I'll try the latest 1.2 whatever version later to see if it installs and compare performance if it does :-\ .
Here's hoping the new 2011 boards won't use Marvell as this is one pos controller ! .

Victim number 922,544,221,486,211, confirmed.......I was number 16 :D

Yes I think we are all agreed that the Marvell 9128 chip was a complete disaster, however the new iteration the 9182 chip seems to work fine.
-
What boards are there coming out on, as in is this THE chip replacing the 9128.....does it actually work at 6G speeds (or close)

--> Marvell 9128 chip was a complete disaster
No , because my RR622 with also 88SE9128 run fine
That is only with the bad marvell BIOS ( i think that is only experimental ) and GigaBYte , ASUS , also others use without recompile for make a powerfull BIOS !!

I know what you are getting at Pierre but at the end of the day Gigabyte along with several other motherboard manufacturers couldn't seem to make it work on the boards and in my view it was a total waste of time. I and several other close friends all purchased SATA3 drives to make the most of this new performance hike but ended up just going back to SATA2 ports and speeds.
Allan the Marvell 9182 seems to work fine and does support SATA3 properly in the tests I have seen.

I wonder if anyone will be offering hardware chip replacement on existing platforms.......hold my breath ... NOW!
Aussie Allan
Update! Now there's a question that worthy,DM,.... can the older 9128 Marvell chip (code name "ice-hole) be replaced with it's new steroid pumping brother .
I have a mate who specializes in CNC Re-Balling PCBs.....if the chips were available, and the numbers, he might be interested in tooling up for it ?
Or even better, maybe runnR3 could be approached as to the feasibility of Gigabyte providing the service or contract with a modest surcharge......gotta be worth an email.....what do you think ?....AA
-
Hi Allan
Your idea does have some legs but I think that maybe this is getting to the point where people might regard the platform as a bit long in the tooth to start rechipping the boards. It dioes stil have plenty of life left in it yet and I suppose the cost would be the deciding factor in any upgrade. Why not try asking runn3R to make enquiries of Gigabyte head office.
I suspect that it might take more than a single chip replacement though.
-
I can imagine the response but you never know........I'll ponder a good email and make the inquiry later.......Congrats on your new mile stone....Awesome!.....AA
-
Thanks for the grats Allan but I post roughly 1K a month when it's busy. I think it would certainly be worth an enquiry email if nothing else. The chip design and specsheets are available from Marvell anyway if he wanted to do the mod as an independant thing.

Same Board GA-X58A_UD7 built sys 18mths ago.. Been having problems and it looks more and more that the MB and or the BIOS is the cause!!updated to F7 but now more problems ...
DVD keeps disappering from my opp. sys. (Win7 64bit Ultimate)
Programs that would not install or work with the orig. BIOS now load and work with F7...
Win7 install disk will not now load and install on this computer (checked disk works on all other Comp)
Please explain Marvell Chip?? ..
Thinking of a new MB but what one!!! dont want more trouble.
Help please..

Hi
I would think it is more likely to be either the drive or the cable that is faulty.

Hi
I would think it is more likely to be either the drive or the cable that is faulty.
2 different DVD drives and 2 different lots of cables into different SATA points???
and these items worked fine in another computer both before and after..since my last blog I disconected the DVD drive and the A drive and rebooted the pc several times then reattached the cables to the DVD drive only and the OS then found the DVD drive!! Wierd!! ..The Win7 Installation disk will still not install on this computer from a DVD drive it goes up to the point of "Install" then says it cant find a driver for the DVD drive and to put one in via a USB or Floppy but this dosent work either!! everything works on another Computer with a GA- X38T-DQ6.. MB I have spent nearly a week on this problem and it has me foxed!!

What type of drive is it? A PATA or SATA?
If SATA what is the port set to IDE mode or AHCI mode? If AHCI try changing it to IDE for the optical drive.
Make sure it is on a different controler to the hard drives.
