Title: Issues with RAM on GA-870A-UD3
Post by: Gooch on June 06, 2011, 06:18:50 am
Hello,

I recently started getting multiple inconsistent BSOD's in my brand new PC. Memtest86+ showed up alot of memory errors. I tested each RAM stick and each slot (1x1, 2x2) and they all were fine. All the sticks checked out fine and up to 12GB of RAM it has been working fine.

However when I bump the system up to 16GB of RAM, Memtest86+ fails test 5 and onwards.

Is there a limitation in this motherboard? The RAM is G-Skill DDR3 1333Mhz

The product page said it supports 16GB of RAM

Hi

Yes it is all down to your settings. They need to be tweaked manually to make up for the extra loading on the memory controller. I can't help you with the exact settings on an AMD platform I'm afraid but I am sure absic or one of the others will be able to.

Just to add more info

Current voltage settings on the north bridge:

Try this, These are my settibgs for useing 4 sticks.
DDR volt control=1.55 to 1.6  I would go with 1.6 seeing you have all 4 slots filled.
 Trfc 0-3 set @ 160ns
 South Bridge volt control = SB/HT =1.4
Not sure how your bios is up on your board but these are common setting on a gigabyte board. let me know how it goes...

I would also be very interested in your results.

Intent is to test 16 GB ( four sticks ) once I get a stable MB.

All modules were already set to 160ns
I upped the DDR voltage to 1.6v however despite having plenty of control over the NB, I cant seem to access any settings for the South

I ran test 5 of Memtest86+. Still producing errors however only 3 compared to the hundreds I received before.

Never mind the last post. I took the 4th RAM chip back out again and re-inserted it. Getting no errors on Test 5 anymore. Intend to do a full memory check but everything appears to be fine.

Appears ramping up the voltage to 1.6v from 1.5v did the trick

Normally a slight increase of voltage will do the trick but it is just knowing what is safe on your particular board/modules. ;)
