Title: Z68 UD7 Do I have a Faulty MB ?
Post by: RafaS on June 09, 2011, 02:22:26 pm
Hi All,

I have been using mostly Asus and EVGA Motherboards in all the PC's I build and this is my first Gigabyte MB install which I am at a loss to the problem.

I have built this in a haf x case with Gskill Ripsaw Memory 8gb, 2 x vertex 3 ssd's, H70 cpu cooler, i7 2600k cpu however when I first power up evrything comes on for about 2 secs then shuts down, then 2secs later comes on again and 2 secs later shuts down, this carries on and on. The post number light does not come on either. I have disconnected all drives and 1 gpu to just leave bare minumum but still the same problem ?

Anyone any ideas

Thanks

RafaS

Hi and welcome to the Gigabyte Forum.

It sounds like yopui could have a short to the chassis from the motherboard or an overjheating problem with the CPU. I would suggest removing the board from the case and trying outside.

The next thing is to remove the motherboard from the case and test it on the workbench.

Make sure that you observe anti-static precautions.

Lay some cardboard or use the motherboard box that is non-conductive on the worktop and remove the motherboard/CPU/heatsink/fan/buzzer/one stick of memory and PSU from the case and put it on the cardboard. Add the keyboard and now I know you haven't got any graphics but try and boot. The system should try and then fail emitting a series of beeps. Please post what sounds it makes.

Thanks for the reply .

I have taken it out of the case and connected 2 x memory sticks cpu power & main connector, h70 cpu cooler and 1 gpu, but I still get exactly the same issue , powers up and down every 2-3 secs.  :-[

Hi

Ok but that isn't what I asked you to do. I know it might sound the same to you but I have reasons for asking you to do something in particular.

When you have done that and posted back maybe you could also include all your hardware so I have a better idea of your system.

Ok Dark Mantis,

I now have just the MB connected , No CPU, No HS, 1 Memory Stick 1 KB and nothing else.

When I hit the power button on the mb it does exactly the same thing boots evry 2-3 secs

Looks defo like a faulty mb  :-[

Thanks anyway

No it definitely won't work like that anyway. No motherboard will boot without a CPU. Please just connect what I asked originally.

Ok Done that and still the same  :-[

There is no beeps at all and post code switch light does not even come on.

I now have to do a return to Aria which is the worst Company in the world to arrange a return  :-[

Well do you want to continue faultfinding in the hope that we can pin down a problem ?

What do you suggest ?

The strange thing is that even with the CPU removed it showed the exact same problem and did not even get any beeps ?

Open to suggestions to save sending it back

Well the next thing would be to try a different PSU. Make sure that it is big enough and that nothing other than what I suggested is connected.

What buzzer do you have installed ?

Oh well that is good news anyway and by the sound of it the RMA procedure wasn't as daunting as you imagined. ;)
