Title: Dimm slot 1 wont boot
Post by: PRT32 on July 06, 2011, 07:53:28 pm
Hi All,

I seem to developed a problem on my GA-EX58-UD3R Rev-1 mobo.
Seems Dimm slot one has failed.
I have tested with 2 dif sticks of corsair and 3 dif stickof ocz.
All the ram sticks will work in the other 3 slots but nothing will work in slot one.

Is this just a failed dimm slot or could it be somehting i am missing.

please help

Hi and welcome.

There are other reasons that the slot might not be working now apart from the slot itself having failed.

The pins in the CPU socket could have got bent or burnt.

The CPU itself could be damaged.

The northbridge that controls the memory could have got faulty.

Are you sure that the memory that you are using is compatible ?

hi
thanks for the reply.

The Ram is compatible as it has been in the same pc for just over 12 months now.
I re seated my heat sink on my cpu yesterday, and now today i am getting this problem.

In that case it has got to be something to do with the CPU heatsink reseating. Did you clean off the old TIM from the CPU and the heatsink before applying fresh and not too much just about the size of a grain of rice in the centre ?

Hi,

Yes i fully cleaned off the TIM on the cpu as well as the bits on the heat sink.
It is strange as it is only dim slot one that is failing.
I have taken heat sink off again and double checked the cpu it is clean.

In that case it is possible that you have bent some pins in the CPU socket when doing the clean off etc. Follow these instructions but be very careful.

Take all the usual anti-static precautions.

Very carefully remove the heatsink and fan. Probably a slight twisting motion is best to release the two as the thermal paste can act like a glue.

Once off remove the CPU taking extreme care both physically and electrically(static) and place somewhere safe.

Make sure that the lighting is very good and even.

Now scrutinise the socket for any pins that are out of alignment, even slightly.
If in any doubt whatsoever take a couple of macro (close up) photos of the socket and post them on here for us to check.

Also look at the bottom of the CPU at the lands (little copper circles) and make sure that there is a mark in each somewhere near the centre.
If there are any missing marks or any of the pins are obviously bent then that is your problem.

Before refitting the CPU clean off all residue of the old thermal paste and the same on the heatsink and then apply a small amount (about the size of a grain of rice) to the centre of the CPU once it is inserted in the socket.

Hi,

Done all that and it is clean free from any bent pins or tim paste.
reset the bios again, still no joy with ddr3_1

Well that only really leaves the motherboard or the CPU then. I think I would try RMAing the motherboard next. You will need to contact your retailer and arrange with them to have the board back for repair. Good luck.
