Title: Graphics card power save with Z68
Post by: elihay on August 02, 2011, 09:40:52 pm
Hi
I am going to build a system based on Intel i7
low power consumption in idle is very important to me
I am planning to use my current graphic card SAPPHIRE HD4870
The problem with this card is that is consumes lots of power even when being idle.
I am trying to understand if this VIRTU feature of the Z68 will save this power waste.
Is the motherboard capable of lowering the supply power to the graphic card so that my card power will really go down?
or will it only put it in idle mode: low clock, not loading with processing tasks, which means it will still consumes the idle power that is not low.
Thanks

Hi

My understanding of Virtu is that it will just leave the "heavy duty" GPU in idle mode until it is required and then bring it into play. Therefore it probably won't help in your circumstances and you will need to purchase a new card that is more power friendly in idle mode to enable your ideas to work.
