PC works fine with BIOS up to F5, any version above that F6, F7 or F8 results in a white screen with blue lines after the Windows 7 Loading screen and when I would expect to see the Windows login screen. The BIOS updates and validates OK and it can be accessed but Windows loads as a white screen and the PC has to be reset or powered off. Al BIOS have been downloaded from the Gigabyte support pages.

Hi Andi,
Are you able to go windows in Safe Mode?
With no similar situation?
If yes, the problem is in Windows.
Otherwise, when you flashed the bios, did you do a clear CMOS.
And after you've done a LOAD FAIL SAFE defaults in BIOS.
Try after go to window in nomal mode.
If you can go into Windows smoothly you can go to Bios and select Load Optimize Default.
and retry go to Window.
Give a news again, here please.

At the moment it's running with F5. I do all the usual BIOS resets before and after the update but it always fails. I can't see how it's a Windows problem if everything stays the same, F4 and F5 work, F6-8 don't. I will try that though and report back.
Cheers.

Hmm, OK it does enter Windows in Safe mode with F6. So what's in F6 that isn't in F5 that Windows doesn't like. I see F6 is quite a lot bigger than F5. As I am making no changes to Windows there's obviously something in F6 that isn't working too well and it seems to be there in F7 and F8.

Hi Andy,
If you go to Gigabyte website , be careful to choose the Biois for Rev 1.0 of your Mobo, because there is a version 2.0
Is it the GA-X58A-UD3R rev 1.0 as displayed in the title of this topic?
Go to http://www.gigabyte.us website, for the drivers, bios, etc
Ok Step by Step, it is possible to improve the situation.
Now before and after each Flash in Bios, make this:
Clear Cmos,
My favorite method is:
disconnect the power cord,
purge the power button in front case,
remove batterie,
Change a positon of the jumper on the motherboard for clear cmos. (Check your manual if necessary).
Make a contact with a paper clip between the batterie connectors fiew 5 sec,
Rechange a normal position of the jumper on the mobo.
Place a batterie
Plug de power cord
Reboot.
If you have a similar method, use it at our convenience.
Go to Bios,
LOAD FAIL SAFE defaults in BIOS.
F10
Reboot
Now Flash your Bios
Boot just for post (for see version the Bios displayed).
Repeat the clear cmos.
Go to Bios,
LOAD FAIL SAFE defaults in BIOS.
F10
Reboot
Go to win safe mode
if ok
Go to win normal mode.
it's boring and slow but more sure.
Try again with F6 only
The F7L and F8A is a BETA Version. Do not use it.
Come back for give a news.

OK did that, failed again, did it again and removed graphics drivers in safe mode all worked! re-booted in normal mode and it worked, re-installed the same video drivers and it is OK. Very odd. So I'm running with F6 now, I will leave F7 and F8 at the moment. I can now try sorting out the 9128 Ports ;)
Thanks for the guidance.

Andi!...... save your self a lot of heart ache , time and frustration.........put Marvell 9128 , or just 9128 into the "SEARCH" field and do some reading with a bottle of GIN......At least the GIN will make you feel better..... ;)
Aussie Allan......PHD in Marvelology..... ;D

LoL, done that already. Currently looking for a replacement motherboard but all the X58 ones use the 9128. I've also heard it works OK on the socket 1155/6 motherboards so what's the deal?
Andi.
-
Hi
The difference betwen the Marvell 9128 on the two boards is the way it is configured mainly. But anyway you can always use a addon board to give you SATA3 access if it is important to you. The new motherboards also have Intel SATA3 support.

Bugger!......where do you start Andi!
In a nutshell the first lot of 9128 chips integrated into various platforms (not just motherboards) was a industry wide disaster for better words, they just didn't give the advertised performance.......It soon became apparent it was a hardware issue that no driver or firmware could rectify........jump ahead 5 chapters and there still integrating the 9128 but now where hearing of winners......not all , but some...... I think they've worked out how to integrate them better with clearer dedicated lanes but this is only a guess!
I recently purchased a 4 port raid card with not one but two 9128 chips embedded in it ...... I almost cried when I saw it , but it actually performs remarkably well.......Ive heard of even dual chip setups in motherboards as well that are also performing well
Some of the latest Giga boards have 9128s or 3 or 4 other versions (9127,9125,9120) all do similar as in SATA3 or SATA3 Raid.......and I have my suspicions that the Marvell 9130 (88SE9130) plays a roll in Gigas new iSSD technology

Quite a lot of use is made of the Marvell 9182 chip now also. Not a typo 9182!

Oops! forgot about that one chief..... good catch!......AA

Dld the updated firmware from a French site for the 9128. Problem is am not sure if it is correct one for M/B.
It looked daunting & am unable to speak french. Latest drivers were there also, found info from a post on
this site but user had different M/Board. Info with firmware was in English & looks as though you have to
create boot disk but need to learn more first if worth it !!
@AA what put me off the addon card was the reported 40sec boot delay which was same on 620.
Regards tinker.

Tinker.... totally understand as this is in fact true with longer boot times..... if you're booting up continuously , ....yes it might not be for you.
But what would you rather have SATA3 with a longer boot time .....or SATA2 that boots fast ?.... for me it was a no brainer! SATA3 Rules!
I turn on my photo rig once maybe twice aday ... with the power under the hood.....I'd except 4 minutes 10 seconds. ;D
Another thing, ... don't even know if this is normal but on my board the 40 second flash screen only happen off a cold boot.......with a restart it skips the Rocket Raid config window...........Bargain!
620 - 2 port internal
622- 2 port external
640 - 4 port internal
644 -4 port external ....... It's presently the only confirmed work around for the X58 Marvell $**$@!!"UP........Aussie Allan

I would have to agree there. My Sandy Bridge sytem only takes 20 seconds to boot but my main X58A-UD7 takes nearer a minute but it really doesn't make much difference as I only normally boot up once a day.

The problem I have is use this PC for multipurpose. Keep different drives & programs. Use it for cloning drives,
fdisk/mbr, security wipes. Its so handy to be able to use my older IDE drives for testing progs. Also have
Win 7 Ultimate x86 & x64. Will keep XP on a drive for older progs though am mainly on win 7 now. This was
my oldest PC that is a tall thin padded tower & put a lot of work modding case enlarging fan in & outlets. Added
card reader, fan controllers & had to cut padding out in part to get heatsink & graphics card in. Thats why I
purchased this board as was close to last new one that will probably not get used again when I get back
from repair. Also couldn't use a larger case due to setup.
Have a 4 PC networked setup crammed in a small room. An Antec/ Gigabyte PC I built, very quiet & used mainly
for net. Plus 2 ShuttleXP, one used mainly for dling the other for DVDs. 2 HD Monitors & KVM switches + TV-PC
monitor for multi Satellite. Being a novice doesn't help. !!! Apart from that have spent a lot of time researching
add on cards that won't work with X58 so not too pleased with Gigabyte. looks like I will have to settle for a
single SATA 2 solid state drive providing a 3.5 case is available to plug it in.
(is it worth trying to update Marvell chip)
Regards tinker.
-
Hi Tinker,
Don't waste your time on trying to udgrade the Marvell chip, there is nothing apart from using the latest drivers that is going to make a blind bit of difference. Just use the SATA2_0 for the boot drive and you will get good speeds and reliability.

Thanks for the reply Dark Mantis, may have come up with a compromise. Will need an SSD drive & some test
software to check drive performance.
Tried the following, 3 drive bays mainly 1 drive used at a time.
1: Ide drive bay.
2: SATA 2 drive bay.
3: SATA 3 drive bay using Manhatten PCI Express card in Graphic 2 slot. Fast seek time on boot.
Booted with SATA 2 & installed Marvell drivers on drive that has to be wiped.
After plugging into bay 3 drive boots. Then put drive back in bay 2 & SATA drive with XP on
in bay three & it boots showing bay 3 as D:/ which is what I want. XP OS is from another PC.
Things I have to find out now. What SSD, can I get case to replicate a standard 3.5 drive
to plug into ICY BOX as drive plugs straight into these without added outer caddy.
Also may try Highpoint Rocket 620 non raid card. Not sure yet if Manhatten actually works
as SATA 3 without test software which I have to find. As already said WD Black SATA 6 shows no
improvement on Win 7 test.
Any advice appreciated.
Regards tinker.

When you come to do the testing ATTO is the recognised program especially for SSDs. Don't forget that SSDs do not like being benchmarked etc too often so don't overdo it.
-
Thanks for the info DM. Still a lot to learn about SSD.
Regards Tinker.

As do we all I am sure especially as it is a new technology and will be evolving fast. Things move fast enough in our world as it is but things like SSDs go along at a sprint!
