Title: XHD for an SSD+HDD setup?
Post by: Hagroth on September 16, 2011, 11:57:52 am
I just built my first computer, here are the specs:
PSU: Corsair 850AX, CPU: Intel core i7 2600K, RAM: 2x4 GB 1600 MHz Corsair Vengeance, HDD: Hitachi 7K3000 (Sata 6Gb/s, 7200 rpm), SSD: Intel 510 SSD (Sata 6Gb/s), VIDEO CARD: Gigabyte 560Ti, MOTHERBOARD: GA-Z68X-UD4-B3, COOLER: Cooler Master V8, CASE: Silverstone "Raven" RV02, OPTICAL DRIVE: Samsung SH-b123l

The HDD and SSD are connected to the 6 Gb/s SATA ports to the Intel Z68-chipset. When I start the computer (I haven't done anything at all yet, so there are no partitions or anything), I get this message:

"There are 2 SATA 6G hard drives installed.
Enable XHD for these 2 drives will gain more hard drive performance !!
-------------------------------------------
Allow XHD to automatically configure XHD for you?
Y: Yes! Please enable XHD for me.
N: No! Thanks and do not show this message again.
Any key: Continue...

Select option..... 8

<DEL> BIOS Setup <F9> XpressRecovery2 <F12> Boot menu <End> Qflash"

As far as I know, XHD is supposed to improve your performance if you have two HDDs by spreading the files across both, allowing the computer to load from both simultaneously, pretty much making the loading twice as fast? Thing is, since I have an SSD, it's already much faster than the HDD, so is there any reason for me to enable XHD? I'm planning to install the OS and all active programs to the SSD, and have the HDD for storage of files I don't regularly use.

Thanks in advance!

You have XHD and Raid1 a bit mixed up.

XHD when active with a SIMULAR drives will allow  raid (0,1,5) or JBOD..(extended array).... and will also allow future, easy migration when another drive is added

For your present setup......do not activate XHD but ACHI.........this will give you the best individual drive speed.......two physical drives on the INTEL Controller with different drive letter in your "computer" tab for easy configuration.....put your optical on the Marvell controller under IDE.

This advise is applicable to your current toy list

I think that Allan has hit it on the head with his explanation and that you are just confused by the different terms.

Ok, thanks! For some reason I couldn't see the replies until now, Chrome must have cached the site somehow. So with "similar", do you mean the same type? Like HDD + HDD? Or just the same speed? And XHD is basically just another version of RAID?
