Title: System temp / Z68 chipset temp

Hi,

My system temp in touch BIOS reads as anywhere between 40-45c. When i touch the headspread where the Z68 chipset is it is very hot.

I have a Corsair 650D with good airflow and a 6970 installed in the PCIe X16 slot.

Do i have something to worry about, or are these temps normal on this board (see sig)?

Ambient temp is not warm, i am in the UK and its cold here, room temp must only be about 20c.

Well the good news is that the heatsink is doing it's job well otherwise it wouldn't be feeling hot, so you have no problems with it making a good connection physically with the chip. Some of these chipsets do kick out a fair amount of heat and as long as you have good cooling in your case to help remove it you should be fine.

It might be worth checking the temperature with some other programs just to make sure that Touch BIOS is right.

Thanks DM. Yeah I have tried a few programs so i think 40-45c is correct. Also when i remove the dust filter off the front of the case it cools down by about 3c (to about 39c), so maybe fitting a more powerful fan there would help.

My 6970 is pretty large and sits right over the Z68 heatspreader, so that prevents any air being directly aimed at the Z68 heatspreader by installing a side fan unfortunately.

I also noticed when booting up from cold and into Windows 20-30 seconds later the Z68 chip is already at about 36c...this is the coldest i have ever seen it.

Just so long as it doesn't all go pop in a few months...

So if anyone esle has similar system temps or anything very different please do reply so i am know what normal temps for these boards are?

Don't worry. If what you say is accurate for temperatures then you have no problem and it will run for ever at those temps. ;)

   Your chipset temps are within pre defined manufacturer parameters .... these chips have a lot of work to do as you proved from a cold boot

  Even a small fan mounted beside or directly over will only improve the temp by about 4-6C if you're still worried .....do it!

  The only way you will get better temps is with water.......I have 9 drives ( 6 with 2  raid sets ) going through this chip so water was necessary yet still hits 42C with a load

Ok thanks guys, i think i'll chill out about this issue now...

I guess 40-45c is only slightly warmer than a hard drive at load, so not that hot... I came from owning an iMac perviously and you should see the temps inside one of those things, everything is hot hot hot!

I guess these chips do have a lot of work to do and i do have a lot plugged into this board, in the pcie slots, usb ports, and in the Sata ports!

It's good to keep an eye on these temperatures just in case of any problems but generally anything under about 60C isn't going to do any harm. Some of the temps that GPUs in particular can run at, and survive, is awesome.
