Running Windows 7 Pro 64-bit, RealTek HD drivers. When I go to the Sound control panel, I can bring up the options, but there is no speaker tab to select. I'm running optical out to my Onkyo A/V receiver. I'm getting sound to my speakers, but only in stereo. The pulldown menu options are only listing 2-channel choices. What do I need to change to get it going in 5.1? Please let me know if you need anymore details. I had this setup running fine with my previous mobo's optical out, it was not a Gigabyte mobo.

So basically I can't get 5.1 on anything but movies? But I thought my other mobo did a 5.1 test and it was working...maybe it was simulated? Anyway, I still can't get it to recognize that any speakers are plugged in. Would going to HDMI out from the video card help anything?

Have you tried turning on "Dolby Digital Live" for the Digital Output (Optical) ?

Provides realistic 5.1-channel surround sound effects during interactive video gameplay, immersing PC and game console players in a highly realistic game experience
There won't be a "Speaker" tab as you haven't plugged into a speaker port, as your using an Optical connection.
