Title: Power supply for GA-990FXA-UD3

I'm building a new setup primarily to study for MCITP certs. Starting with the Win 7 track and getting into Server 2008R2. I figure I'll run ~5 or so VM's. I have the GA-990FXA-UD3,  8GB(4x2) G.Skill 1600 memory, an AMD Phenom II x4 965 Black CPU and a no frills MSi video card (N6400GS 256mb). I'll probably have 3 SATA drives installed and that's about it.

I have to upgrade my power supply and the manual says minimum 500 watts. I'm not looking to impress others by channeling 1.21 gigawatts of electricity into this thing. I just want it to boot and run reliably and not worry about sparks flying out of it. I'm looking for suggestions. I don't want to cheap out, but then again I don't want to be the source of my utility companies Christmas bonuses.

Keep it simple like a 1000 watt Single 12 vbolt rail is the best and if you want good airflow get a modular. but cost more.

All of those have a single 12 volt rail that carries 78 amp or more so should be future proof for awhile.

BTW all of those are a bit overkill for what you need but the PSU is the most important part of your build.

Hi there,

as autotech says the PSU is a very important and often overlooked part of any new build so it is worthwhile getting a good solid model.

On my own GA-990FXA-UD5 I have a Corsair 620Watt Modular unit which has happily powered this board along with a 1090T CPU (O/C'd), Noctua NH-D14 CPU Cooler with two fans, 16 Gig of RAM, two ATI 6770's in CrossFire, two ADATA 60GB SSD's, four HDD's, a DVD/CD burner, six 120mm System fans and various USB peripherals without an issue.

So my recommendation would be something like the Corsair 650Watt Enthusiast or Pro Series modular unit.
