Title: Baffled by top PCI Express Slot, GIGABYTE GA-P67A-UD5-B3.
Post by: MotiveX24 on December 15, 2011, 07:51:14 pm
My friend bought a 6990 for super cheap, (500 bucks) but he bought it through me being that he's in the military. So, I'd never had a Radeon card better then a 5850, so I wanted to try a few benchmarks to compare it to my 580's.

Well. The 6990 is a pretty nice looking card, I uninstall all the correct drivers, turn off the machine, take the 580's out, put in the 6990, in the TOP PCI EXPRESS SLOT, connect everything, fire it on, nothing. Everything else comes on, acting naturally, I even hear windows loading through my headphones. I'm confused for a second, so, I power it down, move it down to the bottom PCI express slot, and it loads!

Wondering if I just toasted one of my pci express slots, I take out the 6990, and put in one of my 580's into the pci express top slot, fires up like nothing changed. I'm baffled. I have no idea what the crap is wrong with my motherboard. Any ideas?

Hi MotiveX24 and welcome to the forum.

Have you checked that the GPU is seated correctly and the power connectors from the PSU are also attached correctly?

Thanks for responding! =D  It is seated properly, I've double and triple checked, power connecters are firm, video card is seated firmly. Baffled. 580 Works just fine in it.

Well going on what you have stated if it was the PCIe slot then I would have thought the other graphics card would not have functioned.......so is there a possibility that you can RMA it? If it is a Gigabyte GPU you have the option of contacting Technical Support here:

OR

Taking it back to where you purchased it and asking them to test it / exchange it.....possibly.

UPDATE

Have you uninstalled the previous drivers, ensuring every artefact has been removed, and installed the latest drivers for the 6990?

Hi

Remove the power cable from the mains supply and then press the power switch on the case for a few seconds just to drain any residual energy in the PSU capacitors.

Once done remove the motherboard battery for at least one hour before replacing it.

Next plug back into the mains supply and boot.

You will now need to enter the BIOS by pressing DEL and load Optimised BIOS Defaults.

Make any other changes to the BIOS settings to suit your self like disabling the floppy drive, disabling the full screen logo and making the HDD the primary boot device and then press F10 to save and exit.

This actually worked PERFECTLY. The Gigabyte 6990 fired right up, everything is perfect. Thanks for the help, everyone. I appreciate it.
