Title: GA-X79-UD7 slow LAN
Post by: Excavator on December 16, 2011, 03:57:04 pm
Intel NIC slow download on 1.0Gbps, but ok on 100 Mbps

This is my first Intel NIC.

Upon fresh Windows7 X64 install, internet was running about half speed. I dig around a little and find it speeds up to normal if I set the adapters link speed to 100mbps.

What's up with that???

I know it's not the router, other computers hooked to the same router run normal and I swapped the cat5 connections around to verify.
Running the internet with the NIC set @100mbps is fine, the problem is that my gigabit LAN is slowed to that 100mbps setting.

The only thing that seems different is the Intel vs Marvel onboard NIC's.
So, is it some obscure setting? I have the latest drivers installed, this is all new soft/hard ware.

Hi Excavator,  ;)

Firsly, check your cable. Have you a 5E or 6 category cable.

Category 5 cabling is most commonly used for faster Ethernet networks, such as 100BASE-TX and 1000BASE-T. If you have 6 cabling is the best.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category_5_cable

I add more infos...here... check more later...

Secondly, in the property of NIC card or Onboard LAN, check
in Advanced Tab...
Speed and Duplex ... set to 1000 Mbps Full Duplex
Jumbo Packet... set to 9014 bytes if possibles (choose the more up level...)

Click Ok , maybe you have a obligation to reboot after change parameters...

Come again here with more infos... You use Firewall or cable wire (RJ-45)... ???

Thanks Gloup_Gloup,
I tried 1000mbps/9014 and internet speed was still 1/2. Did not test LAN speed, though it doesn't really matter as I am not willing to compromise WAN speed for LAN.

Hi Excavator,

Welcome to the forum...  ;)

If you want make a speed test :

http://www.dslreports.com/speedtest

Maybe check your parameters on modem router AND Firewall ... Read your Guide manual...

i am having exactly the same problem, and not happy, considering this is a top end board and it wasn't cheap.

i checked the cable, it is cat5e, i also unplugged the cable from my tower, and plugged it into my laptop, and the connection was back at full speed.

the internet is back at full speed at 100Mbit, but i transfer large files accross network and i prefer 1gig connection.

please help

Hi

Try using Cat6 cable instead.

Have you been using the latest drivers ? If you have tried to update the drivers that could be the problem as the chip is quite funny about old drivers.  Make sure that all vestiges are removed before installing the new drivers.

Make sure that you also have the latest BIOS version installed. Use QFlash though not @BIOS if it needs flashing.

I thought about getting some Cat6... the other computers on the LAN are able to use the same cable/router connection at full speed though.

It's a new build with all the most current drivers. f4d BIOS right now...

Was hoping for a new version from Intel that would address this but it doesn't seem to be a common issue.

yeah i guess what i'm disappointed about is that fact that gigabit LAN isn't exactly cutting edge stuff, and a new top end board does not have it right. I still haven't gone and sourced some cat 6, but it seems silly that my older pc's on the network all seem to be syncing at 1 gigabit, without an issue.

Hi marty16,  ;)

It happened to me sometimes to solve problems with the network card or onboard LAN just uninstall the network drivers.
In the Device Manager.

And clean with the Windows Registry cleaning software.

Ccleaner http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download
jv16 PowerTools 2011 http://www.macecraft.com/downloads/jv16pt_setup_hb.exe
Wise Registry Cleaner Pro http://www.wisecleaner.com/soft/WRCPro.exe

Check if exist a drivers more recent for your mobo.
On Brand of LAN chip.
Or just check on Gigabyte web site for your mobo.

The other computers on your network may be managing with Cat5e but the spec for Gigabit speed is to use Cat6 so I would suggest at least giving it a try. Have a good Xmas.  ;)

I've got a Gigabyte GA-X79-UD5,

It has the EXACT same problem described here.

Situation :
120mbit/s ISP
D-link dir655 router
Cat6 wiring in house
Old computer (Intel X38 mobo)
New computer (Intel X79 mobo, Gigabyte GA-X79-UD5)
Both computers configured as "Auto-negotiate".
Both computers run W7 x64 SP1

Problem :
Old computer gives a max. speed of 119mbit/s during download.
New computer gives a max. speed of 50-60mbit/s during download.

Tried :
Different drivers (16.5,16.7,16.8 )
Different OS (Ubuntu 11.10)
Configured link speed for 100mbit/s full duplex, which as pointed out here works perfectly (100mbit/s during download).

State of mind :
Not amused

If anyone can tell me more about this issue and whether or not this can and will be fixed with a bios update, that would be great.
I'll wait about 1-2 weeks on this and then I'll RMA the board if no solution is given.
Already contacted Gigabyte support directly as well.

Hope the best for all of us :'(
Crossed my fingers hoping that this will be fixable with a bios update and not a new motherboard revision.
Else all that remains is an RMA.

Also here are some links to what appears to be the same problem with the GA-X79-UD3 ! :
http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/1834185 (tried 100mbit/s which "fixed" the issue like us)
http://forums.guru3d.com/showthread.php?t=355177 (this guy didn't try 100mbit/s)

Both computers configured as "Auto-negotiate".

I have often found that "Auto negotiate" doesn't work as well as when manually configured. May or may not make a difference but for the amount of effort involved worth a try! ;)

Setting forced gbit/s full duplex also experiences the issue.
There is some news on the horizon though.
After reading a lot of pages I finally found this one :
http://translate.googleusercontent.com/translate_c?hl=nl&ie=UTF8&prev=_t&rurl=translate.google.nl&sl=de&tl=en&twu=1&u=http://mbforum.gigabyte.de/index.php%3Fpage%3DThread%26postID%3D48274&usg=ALkJrhjxHTXa307Z4e-uqN6qqyckgqshVw#post48274

The issue is confirmed, reproducible and has been pushed to Taiwan tech support.
Let's hope it's fixable with a bios update because this board is awesome (excluding this issue :p)

The new f7 BIOS has definitely fixed my NIC connection problem!

thanks everyone for guidance.

Well it certainly seems like it was a BIOS issue and the new F7 update has remedied it for good. Always great when a solid fix works for everybody. 8)

Not to mention the service Gigabyte have provided their customers who have purchased  one of the X79 motherboards.

Guys,

I thought this issue was resolved with F7 but something is still awry. I recently upgraded my internet package to 50Mbps. I had been at 15Mbps. I kept hitting a wall of 25Mbps with the new package. I tried everything from new CAT6 cabling to removing my router. Same result. Then I tested with my secondary machine. 50Mbps!

I remembered this issue from the early bios revisions and even tried flashing back to f7 from f9. I have also tried f10 with the same results.

I am just curious if anyone else out there is still having this problem.

I am afraid that I am not in the happy position of being able to test this out for you. My maximum is 30Mbs and have no problem with that so far, however I am not running the X79 chipset if it is a perculiar thing to that set of boards.

Dark Mantis,

Thanks for the reply. Yeah I think that was my biggest problem. I thought the issue was resolved because I was reaching my target speed before. I am hitting a consistent 25-30Mbps on Auto/Manual Giga link.

Anyone else out there that can test with 50Mbps+?
