Title: ga-x58-usb3 - second graphics card on pcie x4 not recognized
Post by: tribas on December 28, 2011, 06:03:14 pm
Hi,
first of all my system specs
ga-x58-usb3
intel core i7 960 3.2ghz
6 GB DDR 3 2000Mhz tripple channel
Asus GTX 570 direct CUII
750W corsair PSU
Windows 7 64 ultimate

my problem is, i want to add my old geforce 9800GT as a physics card and tripple monitor config. As the GTX 570 is too large and ocupies 3 slots, the 1st and 2nd pcie slots are covered with it. so my only option is the third pcie x4 slot to put the old 9800GT. I did this and the 9800gt  its not detected in the device manager. when the system is started the card fans work, and it has some heat, but for windows it´s like it´s not there...
can someone help me please?

thanx in advance

Hi tribas,  ;)

Specification:
http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=3571#sp

The PCIEX4_1 slot shares bandwidth with the PCIEX1_3 slot.
When the PCIEX4_1 slot is popu- lated with a PCIe x4 (or above) card, the PCIEX1_3 slot will become unavailable.

Reverse your graphics card... put GTX570 in PCIEX16_2 , and other in PCIEX16_1  Why not?

The problem is that the card is an Asus GTX 570 directCU II, it ocupies 3 slots. the pcie1_3 is not really in use by the card, it´s just covered by it´s size. Besides, i forgot to mention that i have an Asus My Cinema-P7131 Hybrid on the PCI slot, of i put the GTX 570 in the pcie16_2, it covers the PCI slot.
I dont understand why that pcie4_1 dont work even when the pciex1_3 is not in use since it shares the bandwith...any other ideas?

Hi again,

In pricipe it would mean that if one is populated, the other slot will not be able to provide the signal from the PCI Express bus line.

Hi

I can see no reason for the graphics card not to work in the bottom PCIEx4 slot if you are not using the x1 slots that is. It might just be down to the fact that it is only an x4 and the4 card might physically require a x8 slot minimum to work. Don't forget it is not just a case of smaller bandwidth there are actually fewer connections in an x4 slot compared to an x8 slot. Sorry buddy!
