Hi I have decided to go for a AMD Phenom II X6 Six Core 1100T Black Edition 3.30GHz (Socket AM3) as i don't know when piledriver is coming out plus i don't need to change my mobo I have a couple of questions what ram can i use with the six core and how much will my mobo support, also any good dealers that have the six core in stock as it seems to be hard to find now.
-
Which motherboard do you own? I have only seen the 1055T .
Interms of memory have a look at these configurators from Corsair and Crucial:

Hope this helps

No probs....if you use either of the configurators I have listed you will be able to select your RAM modules....I have just used the Corsair Memory configurator for your motherboard and there is quite a selection.... so explore and see which ones you want for your system.
If you are in the UK then Scan have the 1055T...here:
http://www.scan.co.uk/products/amd-phenom-ii-x6-1055t-thuban-sok-am3-28ghz-9mb-total-cache-125w-retail
I'm sure there are others....hope this helps.

Hi cookiebun,
I've had a good look around and can't find the 1090 or 1100 processors anywhere in the UK from my usual sources. This would fit with the reports that AMD have stopped producing them.
I did find several options on ebay but these were from retailers in France, Germany, Italy and other EU countries so if you have your heart set on one of these processors then this might be your best bet.
-
There seem to be a few 1055T's about.......at the moment.
-
Yes, there is but cookie bun said:
Hi I have decided to go for a AMD Phenom II X6 Six Core 1100T Black Edition 3.30GHz (Socket AM3)
The 1055 wouldn't be an improvement over the existing CPU they are using, despite the fact that the 1005 is a hex core it has a much lower clock speed v the quad core 965.
-
There are some on ebay....some secondhand....not sure on the warranty it that situation and returning the component if it is purchased in the EU or elsewhere. If there are no 1100T's....then that is the only 6 core if cookiebun wants a 6 core.
UPDATE
@Cookiebun....have a look at this link:

Hi teknology9 I saw them on amazon but they are a bit pricy I would be aswell goint Intel at that price.
Hi absic so really there is no processor that amd have other than Bulldozer and we wont go there that i could upgrade to that would give me a boost other than Intel
-
Hi Cookiebun,
Yes..they are a bit pricey....I'm going over to an Intel platform in the future also.

Hi cookiebun,
I was recently asked (just before Christmas) to build a new PC for one of my friends. I did a lot of digging around and for the price that they wanted to spend I put together an Intel system better and cheaper than I could an AMD version.
AMD have dropped a swathe of Phenom processors in favour of the FX chips they have recently released and sadly I have to say that, at the present time, the CPU you currently have is better in most ways than the others that are available. Although there should be some new revision FX Chips coming along in a couple of months, there is no guarantee that these will be better than those already available.
Based on the current situation I switched to an Intel system using the i5 2500k CPU and it has really impressed me. And, if you haven't already done so, have a look here: http://forum.giga-byte.co.uk/index.php/topic,7603.msg60247.html#msg60247 as it might help you with your decision making of which way to go.
-
Hi absic I think the intel is the only way to go as i like to keep up with things be prepared as i will need a bit of help,( don't tell Dark Mantis) but would this one be a step in the right direction, BX80623I72600 - Intel Core i7 2600, S1155, Sandy Bridge, Quad, 3.4GHz, HD2000 IGP 850Mhz, 8MB Cache, 95W, Retail
-
Ah cookiebun, I'm sure Dark Mantis will have read this by now.
I am sure that other's with more experience of the Intel platform will offer different advice but personally I wouldn't go for the i7 2600 although it is a good CPU.
Why's that?
Well, if you want to have the opportunity to overclock and get even more speed for your money then you really need to go for one of the processors that end with the letter "k" as these have unlocked multipliers (like the Black Edition AMD Processors) and this makes O/C'ing that much easier. I settled on the i5 2500k partly because it was given to me as a thank you (although I was offered other's) and also because it had the unlocked multiplier. The i5 2500K is currently around £40 - £50 cheaper than the i7 2600 (locked multiplier) and about £60 cheaper than the i7 2600k. The only real difference between the i5 and i7 chips is the base speed of the CPU's with the i5 2500 (k) being 3.3GHz and the i7 2600(k) running at 3.4GHz
As you know, in my AMD system I have the Phenom ii x6 1090T and although it was good the i5 2500k is so much nippier and faster in almost everything I have tested. When it came to O/C'ing I had to settle on 3.8GHz with the 1090T but have already got 4.6GHz from the 2500k without any major issues.
As with all things, Intel are planning on releasing new CPU's so there will be those that advise waiting and seeing what the new crop of processors can do. But, from my own experience I would say go for the i5 2500k now, as I am sure you won't regret it.

The new Ivybridge has a lower TDP and improved graphics.
http://www.vortez.net/news_story/more_ivybridge_details_unearthed.html
http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/cpus/2011/10/10/all-about-ivy-bridge/1
If you are prepared to wait and especially if your motherboard can take advantage of the integrated graphics.
-
As absic has just been telling you cookiebun the i5 2500K is probably the best bang for buck at the moment and will usually overclock better then the i7 2600K even, as is often the case. The i5 is limited to the four physical cores though whereas the i7 has four virtual cores as well giving a total of eight which can be usefull if you require a multithreading CPU but as I mentioned this often limits the overclocking ability.
-
Hi Dark Mantis as you can guess i am totally out of my comfort zone as far as Intel is concerned, I found this one on Scan is it any good
BX80623I52500K - Intel Core i5 2500K Unlocked, S1155, Sndy Bridge, Quad, 3.3GHz, HD3000 IGP 850Mhz, 6MB Cache 95W Retail if so can you suggest a good mobo that is good for overclocking and has good sound and ofcourse it has to be Gigabyte and last of all is there anything else i would need to change in my setup to run Intel

Well of course you would have to change the cooler most likely and the memory because you really need RAM that is 1.5v matching kit. Beyond that take your choice of Gigabyte motherboards that have the required features for your style of computing. If you have any specific questions I will do my best to answer them. ;)
-
Hi cookiebun,
if you could give an indication of how much you have available it would be easier to advise on motherboards, processor, RAM etc.
I think your Hyper212 should be re-usable on an Intel system as it should have come with the necessary components for both the AMD and Intel platforms.
-
Hi absic i was looking at £320 approx for chip and mobo alone. a mobo that will allow overclocking and with a bit of quality is this one any good,
Gigabyte GA-Z68XP-UD3P Z68 Socket 1155 HDMI Onboard 7.1 Channel Audio ATX Motherboard. The i5 chip i mentioned is on ebuyer for £170.
-
Hi again,
I have to say that this was one of the motherboards I was looking at when I got my i5 and there is a review on Hexus that you might like to look at here: http://hexus.net/tech/reviews/mainboard/31388-gigabyte-z68xp-ud3p-motherboard/ I didn't get this one in the end and am now using the GA-Z68X-UD3P-B3 but they are very similar boards.
The one you are looking at has an HDMI port which I didn't want and I think this is the only major difference. ( http://www.gigabyte.com/products/comparison/list.aspx?ck=2&pids=3979,3850 ) If you get the new Rev1.3 version of this motherboard then it has PCIe3.0 slots rather than the PCIe2.0 that my motherboard has but this, of course, would be dependant on what the supplier has in stock and is more about future proofing your system as the i5 2500k is still only PCIe2.0 and you would need a new Ivybridge CPU to take advantage of this feature.
As DM has already mentioned, you could probably also do with different RAM and these are the kits I would be looking at:

Hi absic I will do my nut in and have a look at the items you suggest , time i did some reading about Intel,I will get back to you.

What about a Phenom II 960T? Quad core but can unlock to hex-core. They are still currently available in he UK for around £85.
I was lucky, I got 1090T just before Xmas....

Hi the cpu cooler says Intel Socket 1156 but the mobo is 1155 will it do
-
My Noctua cooler stated the same but the 1155 socket uses the same cooling mounting holes as the 1156 so you should be fine.
-
Hi cookiebun,
The only way to be 100% sure is to check the manufacturers website...here:
http://www.coolermaster.com/product.php?product_id=6603
Yes, reading the specification, your CPU is compatible with the 1155 socket.
Teknology9
-
Yes the 1156 and 1155 sockets are physically the same size and so no problem. If a heatsink is made to fit an 1156 motherboard it will fit the newer 1155 motherboards too with no adapter.
-
Hi looking like this so far
Intel Core i5 2500K Unlocked, S1155, Sandy Bridge, Quad, 3.3GHz, HD3000 IGP 850Mhz, 6MB Cache 95W Retail
Gigabyte GA-Z68XP-UD3P, Intel Z68, S 1155, DDR3, SATA III - 6Gb/s, RAID SATA, PCIe 2.0 (x16), ATX
16GB (4x4GB) Corsair DDR3 Vengeance LP Jet Black, PC3-12800 (1600), Non-ECC, CAS 9-9-9-24, XMP, 1.5V
Maybe ? Corsair H80 Hydro Series High Performance CPU cooler, S775/1155/1156/1366/2011/AM2/AM3
or else stick with the cooler I have, will I see a difference with this setup compared to what I have.
-
To be fair these platforms run fairly cool anyway and any decent heatsink/fan will cope with most any but the highest overclock. Something like the Noctua NH-D14 or similar will not get into a sweat running it. ;)
-
Shame on you DM and absic!!!! Pimping Intel in the AMD section!!!

Hi cookiebun
in a word no.
You are in a similar position that I was in a while back and I found that in my case, apart from the motherboard and CPU everything was interchangeable, but I already had the Corsair RAM running on my AMD rig which you do not, hence the slightly extra cost for you in this area.
-
Hi thanks TheFriend, Dark Mantis and absic for all the help slight set back wifes phone died so have to try not to look dissapointed about using some of upgrade money to keep the peace and buy her a new one but hopefully start the new build next month, talk to you all soon on the Intel site.
regards and thanks

That's really underhanded of the wife, isn't it! >:(
-
as we all know amans gotta do what a mans gotta do, ( for an easy life).
-
Keep an eye on her!
My wife has broken her phone 3 times in two years .... all within days of the new Apple i Phone models being released

You just got to get a better insurance policy...one that covers accidental damage!
-
Yes, those 1100ts have rocketed up in price here in Japan, too. I couldn't believe it! I suppose that is an indicator of the lamentable quality of AMD's FX chips. Looks like I got lucky with my 1065t.
I agree that Intel is the only game in town if one is looking to upgrade now.
-
The past floods in Asia has really knocked around production world wide for many industries .... you just have to compare hard drive prices to 12 months ago
Things are coming back on line but at a pace no one expected ..... unfortunately supply and demand dictates unit price until full production is restored in this region
All companies are being affected ....Sony and Canon to name just two
Aussie Allan
-
Hi that's it i have settled for this setup
Intel Core i5 2500K Unlocked, S1155, Sandy Bridge, Quad, 3.3GHz, HD3000 IGP 850Mhz, 6MB Cache 95W Retail £174.18
Gigabyte GA-Z68XP-UD3P, Intel Z68, S 1155, DDR3, SATA III - 6Gb/s, RAID SATA, PCIe 2.0 (x16), ATX £126.84
16GB (4x4GB) Corsair DDR3 Vengeance LP Jet Black, PC3-12800 (1600), Non-ECC, CAS 9-9-9-24, XMP, 1.5V £70.99
I had thought on the mobo with the 20gb SSD but i can allways add one of them latter the wife didn't hurt me to much with the phone she got one the same as my daughter got the week before but i don't think there was a conspiracy. I can either get the chip this month or the mobo and ram what do you suggest I don't want to keep the money till next month just incase something else brakes down in the house, I think i should go for the mobo and ram.
-
Yes, I would get Mobo and RAM too.
-
CPU has the best chance of dropping in price in the coming months ..... memorys just at an all time low and unlikely to move down further ..... at least with the Mobo and mem, you can keep your self busy and keep an eye on pricing and who's putting out deals in the coming months.
Aussie Allan
-
Hi do you know if revision 1.3 of the mobo I have selected has been released in the UK as I have my eyes on one of the AMD 7970 hopefully in the future. I know SandyBridge i5 don't support PCI-E 3.0 but i think the Ivy Bridge chips do and they as far as i know will fit the Z68 boards.
-
Z68 and Z77 CPU compatibility is still up in the air .... I know it's the hardest thing to do ..... but to save grief down the line ..... stick your money in a term saver or somewhere you will have real difficulty getting you hands on it ..... and just keep adding to it to you reach the goal ....
I once purchased a mother board with the thinking of adding a piece at a time when the funds became available......2 years later , I was the proud owner of a 3 yr old machine :'(
Aussie Allan
-
Hi Aussie Allan thanks for the advice but I have decided to get the mobo and ram that is if i can find rev 1.3
-
Good luck with the huntin ..... Scan have some ....as do Novatech but you'll have to phone for version numbers! ...... no one includes them on there websites
Aussie Allan
-
Thanks I noticed that I will give them a call on Monday,
regards cookiebun

Hi no luck in getting the Gigabyte GA-Z68XP-UD3P rev 1.3 so i might just go for the rev 1.0, there is some good deals out there I missed one yesterday where it had been reduced to £87 i might give them a call and see if they will let me have at the deal price, it still seems a good mobo, last thing what is the difference between the Gigabyte GA-Z68XP-UD3P and the GA-Z68X-UD3P-B3
-
At a glance.... the UD3P has Support for 3TB+ Unlock , ..... Support for TouchBIOS and on-board graphics over the B3 version.
there also a HDMI port on the I/O panel lacking again on the B3 version .....although handy features.......if you don't use them ...... why pay for them!....... please correct me if I made mistakes. ;)
