There seems to be more recent updated drivers and firmware for Renesas/NEC USB 3.0 controllers at
http://www.station-drivers.com/page/renesas.htm
I was wondering if anyone has used these successfully, and if so, what precautions might be necessary?

Station drivers can be a good source of the very latest or tweaked drivers to try out if there problems under the hood .... being a French site .... a smattering of French can be a good thing,........ but not essential when number are concerned.
"What precautions might be necessary?"
I suppose if you want to be Ultra careful you might write down the version number of the current driver you're using before the update.....if you don't completely delete it.......you can also just roll-back the driver through device manager if things go tits up.
when I first read your post.....the first thing that popped into my mind about being careful was to pop a Condom on the mouse :D
