Title: P67A-D3-B3 1600 memory issue
Post by: dskiller on January 30, 2012, 05:08:33 pm
hello here my specs

intel 2600
memory 16gb memory http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820104173
3  1tb driver
nvidia 580gtx
soundblaster hd

first I had 8gb memory set at 1600 with intel profile and ran and past prime95 test

upgraded to 16 memory of same memory and set same profile and system bsod when running prime95

manually set timing and voltage and prime95 ran for couple minutes but then bsod

I let the bios auto config the 16gb memory to 1333mhz and ran prime for a hour and had no problems

why wont the system run stable at 1600 with 16gb memory?

  Welcome Dskiller

Many things will come into it when population counts rise to 16Gb and beyond ..... the most common is raising the QPI/VTT a tad along with the memory voltage......if you raise DRAM Voltage to say 1.68 Volts ..... Minimum QPI/VTT Voltage will be 1.18V ..... Memory Voltage must remain within 0.5V of QPI/VTT Voltage (it can go beyond but not lower than)  or damage to the CPU can ensue with the memory controller now residing on the CPU Die.

Anyway this is an excellent place to start.

Four sticks = twice the load and twice that has to play well together at tight tolerances.

The QVLs have a * next to the 1600s with the footnote that only 1333 is supported with four sticks.

Take dskiller's advice and play with the voltages, timings, etc.

An alternative may be your memory's tech support and maybe they'll eventually RMA a 2x8 for your 4x4s at the cost of the price difference.

Take dskiller's advice and play with the voltages, timings, etc. ? ? ? ? ? we are ALL here to help people get the very best out of their systems .... not tell them near enough is good enough.....

Ive managed to get 24 Gig ticking over very nicely following my own advise ... 2x8s have less chance of running with zero problems ...... 4 gB modules at 1600 are well matured and are at the very middle of the sweet spot for performance and price

Usually because the QPI/Vtt is not set right, normally too low. Sometimes the memory voltage needs a tweak as well.

Drama queen routine is getting old and I don't know how this is supposed to help.

Four sticks are less likely to perform the same as two sticks; Intel states that, QVLs state that, memory manufacturers will tell you that.  I don't think it should be that way but my wishes don't change the fact that that is the way that it is.  To get four running at advertised specs (intended for two, since it is a KIT of TWO sticks), one will have to play with it.  I don't have a scrye that tells me what settings will work with the OPs equipment...sorry.

My definition of "sweet spot": the highest level of performance possible with 100% reliability.

One setting to try: ensure Performance Enhance is set to [Standard].

            Here   we-go    again! ...... getting a bit of a rep for yourself there little fella  :D :D :D :D

                        ANSWER!

Thats because I'm not trying to help you !........ I'm trying to help the bloke that asked the question ;)

lol anyway............

I was experimenting with memory settings. I disabled rank interleaving and prime ran with no problems. I did lose little bandwidth, but it was only like 1% loss according to AIDA64

Just to make sure it was Rank Interleaving causing it, I turned it back on and ran prime95 and system had instant bsod.

Nice catch.

I wonder if the problem was the memory controller being bottle-necked trying concurrent access of four double-sided sticks and not the memory itself.  Perhaps halving the rank interleaves may fix it; anyone know how to view the determined value when [Auto] is selected?
