Over the last few days I have upgraded my rig with a new board. Due to
money constraints, I purchased really cheap DDR3 and used my older processor
in the build. My question is this...
When I get around to upgrading the cpu and memory is there anyone with the
970a-UD3 that has suggestions regarding memory.
I prefer 8GB total and lowest timings possible. I know (after reading some great info here)
that the FX CPUs have an onboard mem controller that is 1866MHz limited at stock speeds
and voltages. Please know that I'm not lazy and will be doing research to find the answers
I'm lookin for, but just looking to hear from some of you with hands on experience.
Someone may notice that my sig indicates water cooling for my rig, but
that is because of the Texas summer heat and noise/fan issues. I don't overclock
for this reason.
Regards,
Dave

Hi Dave
Well personally I like the Corsair memory, but also use Mushkin when I can afford it. The Corsair Vengeance is good RAM at the moment and can be picked up for a reasonable price, well over here in the UK anyway. It will run at 1600 and overclock to 1866 usually without problem.
-
I use crucial 8GB 1600Mhz CAS 8. Windows Experience Index gave this a 7.7 and that is maybe max. But it was recognised as 1333Mhz CAS11 by the board, although manual timing doesn't appear to be harmful: I ran prime95 for over an hour without error, but Kaspersky full scan is more testing since 17 errors per sec were shown for about a second when the voltage ramped up to well over what I thought was top voltage.
CPU Vid 1.41v

Just playing with the cheapo stuff I have and have successfully booted with 8-8-8-22-30 @ 1.5v.
A bit of Memtest 86 ver4.0a while I watch the Nascar race on TV.
Will post results when completed... If it passes, then we'll try some more punishment ;D
-
I can't say I have noticed that Kaspersky is particularly stringent although it obviously uses a lot of disk and certain other systems. Try Linx or Prime95 etc.
By the way my Corsair Dominators that I use in my work system weigh in at 7.8 on the WEI. I reckon the Dom GTs would make the top score.
-
Cheers Mantis; I think WEI only goes up to 7.9 and so 7.8 must be tops. These memory are called Ballistix and were quite cheap, apparently on offer but maybe they are permanently on offer.
I like them because they are not too tall and will fit under the fan.

I have this setting running stable now:
Unganged 2T 671MHz @ 7-8-7-21-28
SPD lists JEDEC#2 as 533MHz @ 7-7-7-20-27
That's not that bad...
-
That is not bad at all Dave; but what is the last number in the list? I haven't overclocked mine but it was detected wrong and so I set 8,8,8,24 all of which I just about understand, but there is a whole lot of other numbers and the next one is 40, I don't know what that stands for and the advice from Crucial was only to set the first four.
What would happen if I changed the 40?

If I understand your question right, in my previous post the last number represents ROW CYCLE TIME (mine is set at 28).
I'll try and post a picture here.

This is a clickable thumbnail.
Just to give you an idea about how sensitive OC timings are...
If I change RAS# to CAS# delay (tRCD) to a value of 7, I get a BSOD during OS loading,
BUT, this setting works fine with no errors (at least so far).
So sometimes a single change of value can make all the difference.
Whats cool about the BIOS in this instance is the three rows of information that
show actual settings, SPD and AUTO settings! This saves me time and I applaud the fellow
who came up with this.
Keep working at it, change one thing at a time and know that it's really just an investment of time
to find your machine's optimal settings. The only caution I give everyone is to KNOW (without guessing
or taking someone else's word for it) your CPU's limits of it's onboard memory controller (in MHz).
We can damage the cpu's controller by overclocking the memory and leaving the cpu at stock speeds,
this unknowingly happens to people every day. We are a strange lot (geeks), who spend hours rebooting,
clearing CMOS, pulling out whats left of our hair and reading forum post like this one, just to get a
couple more MHz of performance out of the hardware we purchase. 8)

Hey guys,
one member ask me for new BIOS and here is BIOS F5g (http://www.fileden.com/files/2009/12/20/2696817/970AUD3.F5G.zip).
;D

Cheers Dave :)

No problem Dark Mantis.
BIOS is released just 3 days ago, hope will help.
-Support Quick Boost function on AM3+ CPU
-Modify memory compatibility
-13.Mar.12

Thanks for the bios heads up ex58 8)
I flashed, then installed a new FX6100 and now have the ram at 1.5v 1600MHZ at 9-9-9-27-36 stable as a rock ;D
Did not expect $39 8GB kit to do this well, can't wait to get some better quality and go for an easy 1866.
-
Glad to hear it worked alright and now everything is ok. ;)

I have Gigabyte 970A-UD3 board
Is F5G bios newer then the F5 bios on Gigabytes site?
-
Any BIOS with a letter after the number is a BETA bios, ie F5h. When the BIOS becomes final they drop the letters.
The 970 bios went through 3 or 4 letters, ie F5g and F5h before it became solid F5.

Okay, thank“s for the info. :)

I've tried a dhalf dozen different memory with very little difference with any of them. From my 1333MHz 7-7-7-21 ram to my 2133MHz there was literally no difference in performance. I think I gained 1fps on my game with was less than 1% increase. Unless you run some program that needs a lot of access to memory, generic is the way to go and save your money for SSD or better processor.
-=Mark=-
ps. if you want added stability, I just stuck some of my server ECC/UDIMM RAM in and the MB picked it up fine and even had ECC options in the BIOS.
Cost was minimal @ $69.99 for 8GB (2 x 24GB) free shipping at the egg.

Just an update of a bit of success.
In the blue slots (CPU ID lists them as slots 1 & 2),
I've installed a Kingston kit KHX1600C9D3/4GX,
At 1.5 (stock memory voltage) with the Northbridge @ 2013.5MHz,
The sticks are stable @ 805.4MHz
FSB:DRAM @ 1:4
CL 9.0
tRCD @ 9
tRP @ 9
tRAS @ 27
tRC @ 36
Very happy with this board...
