Switching from 790X-UD4P to Z68-UD3H-B3. With a Win 7/64 Home Premium SSD, I made a Windows system image before the switch and recovered it afterward. Everything looks ok except for two biggies. First, there's no USB and thus no mouse. BIOS USB settings are enabled and mouse works with Windows install disks (and XP). I also have - or had before a repair install gone bad - an XP drive where the mouse worked even before sticking in the CD. So what could be the difference? I was able to use keystrokes and a file manager to get into the Gigabyte CD, but nothing has made a difference so far.
Second problem. After the switch neither the XP nor Win 7 drives are connecting with the internet. Cable modem and router are ok, and the cable company and lights on the modem assure me that the signal is there, but something's stopping the connection. Is there something in one of the drivers or a BIOS setting that would affect this? Again, is there something else? I've got F11 BIOS, which is the latest. Thanks,

Reinstalled the 790X motherboard (AMD) until I get a better handle on the Z68 board problem (site now doesn't recognize me as OP). As you can see, internet and mouse working on the old board (Win 7/64). So what the heck is going on with the other board?? I neglected to mention that the Z68 board is using an i7-2600K.

was this a clean install of the OS's or were you trying to use the cloned image(s) from your previous setup?
If it was a clean install did you remember to load all of the drivers for the new Intel board?
If it was a cloned image from your AMD system then you need to do a clean install as AMD and Intel need different drivers.

Maybe I'll end up that way, but at this point I'm looking for information. If the XP drive worked without the drivers, then it had something the Win 7 one didn't. I followed the instructions at http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/135077-windows-7-installation-transfer-new-computer.html, Method 3. Is the Realtek Ethernet driver the key for internet connectivity? And what's the one for the mouse?

Yes you are trying to do something which is inherintly doomed. The registry and various drivers will be different on the old and new systems so any clone won't work properly. You will need to use different drivers for the lanport for a start. The mouse depends on what type it is. If it is USB it should work but not until Windows loads the drivers.

Given your good news, I've decided to use the mobo switch to put in a larger SSD and put the old in a laptop. After installing Win 7 on the new one, if I plug in the old SSD (Win 7), will the system likely get confused on start up? The idea would be to use it to get the old email, files and app settings. The alternative is backing up everything as files to an HDD. thanks,

The safest approach would be to back up all thre files that you wanmt to keep and transfer over to the new system. You might well get away with just booting from the new drive and then inserting the old drive in a hot swap scenario but it is always a chance that something might not work correctly.

I don't mean a hot swap but simply plugging in the old drive as a second for the purpose of getting what I need off of it. My question is would that cause any confusion to Windows on start up.

As an active partition probably yes! That was why I suggested using a hot swap procedure.

Oh, I didn't know what "hot swap" meant, and what I found online about it refers to setting up one drive, then pulling it and putting in another with the idea that the system won't be able to tell the difference. Definitely not my idea. Thanks,
