Hi All,
I built a system with GA-Z77X-UD5H motherboard, Core i7-2600 processor. The results are so far satisfactory except for one problem I'm facing.
I installed an LSI SAS9211-8i HBA PCIe x8 card on the middle (x8 PCIe socket); no matter what I try I cannot get the card to be recognized by the system.
The card works perfectly in a G45-chipset based motherboard. ???
I'll greatly appreciate any help solving this problem.

I am not familiar with this card at all but I see no reason why it shouldn't work fine with this motherboard. Have you made sure that you are using the latest BIOS on the motherboard and the latest firmware and drivers on the card ?
Is there any sign of it in Device Manager ?

I upgraded the motherboard's firmware to the latest I could see for this model - F5.
The HBA's BIOS and firmware were upgraded using a different system (they were dated early 2011). This did no change in regard for getting the card to be recognized on the newer Z77 motherboard. I also tried clearing the CMOS settings on the Z77 motherboard, but no help.
On the older G45 mobo I get the SAS/SATA HBA's BIOS prompt after POST just before the OS loads, where I'm able to configure the card/disks/arrays, but on the Z77 this prompt is never shown.
Device manager doesn't show this device but I can well understand why. :(

Obviously if the BIOS isn't even seeing it then Device Manager isn't going to list it either. That just proves it.
You said about the firmeware update for the card being early 2011 which actually makes it about a year or more old. This is quite a long time in this field and I think it would be worth updating it again now.

I also said that I have upgraded the HBA card's BIOS and firmware using a different system, with which the card is being detected without any problem...

Just because the card is being seen by another system doesn't mean that upgrading the firmware won't help it be found by this motherboard! It's up to you though, just trying to help.

DM, I know you're trying to help and I appreciate it. I'll try to explain again.
I installed the card on a different system. I successfully upgraded the HBA's firmware and then replaced it in the Z77 system, where it remained undetected even after the upgrade.
It's so frustrating.. I am certain it's a small thing. Maybe some BIOS setting on the Z77... Who knows :(

If didn't help,you must request BIOS from GGTS to fix LSI card issue with you board:

I've updated the Motherboard BIOS with the file you linked, the problem remains and the SAS HBA is still undetected :(
I already filed a ticket with GGTS yesterday, I'm waiting for their reply.

Just wanted to share another test I preformed - I dropped the SAS HBA card into a system with a GA-Z68M-D2H motherboard, it works fine.
I'll give GGTS a short while to come back with a reply, otherwise I'll relieve the Z68 from my other system, though it's no match for the Z77... :-[

I received a reply from an LSI support engineer, saying "the motherboard should support – Interrupt 19 capture". Any idea how to check/enable this feature?

Interrupt 19 is the software interrupt that handles the boot disk function. It is typically handled by the motherboard BIOS although it can also be handled by the optional boot ROM BIOS in some IDE/SCSI host adaptors.
When enabled, this BIOS feature allows the ROM BIOS of these host adaptors to "capture" Interrupt 19 during the boot process so that drives attached to these adaptors can function as bootable disks. In addition, it allows you to gain access to the host adaptor's ROM setup utility, if one is available.
When disabled, the ROM BIOS of these host adaptors will not be able to "capture" Interrupt 19. Therefore, you will not be able to boot operating systems from any bootable disks attached to these host adaptors. Nor will you be able to gain access to their ROM setup utilities.
If you use separate IDE/SCSI host adaptors, you should enable this BIOS feature if you wish to boot from any drive attached to your host adaptors. It will also allow you to gain access to any ROM-based setup utilities.
However, if you are not using any separate IDE/SCSI host adaptors, it's recommended that you disable this BIOS feature.

ex58, thanks for the information, I haven't seen such an option anywhere in the BIOS setup screens.
In any case, I'll try flashing the new BIOS version.

Flashed F6i, issue remains. Also did some more testing -
2 types of graphics cards were installed in both of the x16 / x8 PCIe slots and found to work fine
Intel network cards in the x1 PCIe slots also work fine
An old Promise SATA controller installed in a x1 PCIe slot does not wok.
Conclusion - Any expansion card that needs a special BIOS to be hooked and installed after the Power On Self Test does not work as it should with this motherboard.
All cards are tested and work okay on different systems; nevertheless, this does not seem like a simple physical problem on the Z77 board - the x16/x8 slots work as expected with GPU cards. ???
