Title: Question about GA-Z68XP-UD3
Post by: uxbod on April 27, 2012, 03:46:01 pm
Hello all,

I wish to build a new desktop system using a Chenbro case that has a RAID cage with four bays.  Ideally I would like to use the four bays for data disks so have been thinking about getting a motherboard that has an mSATA port on it.  The GA-Z68XP-UD3 appears to fulfil all my needs with all the SATA connections it has.  Now my simple question is if I purchase a 60GB mSATA and connect it to the M/B can I then install Linux onto it and boot from there ?

Will be looking to pair it with 8/16GB RAM, nVidia GTX 560 and some sort of Intel processor; not sure which one yet.

Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

Thank you.

Hi

Although I haven't personally used it from what I understanbd the mSATA port is really used as a cache for a larger drive so it appears to be much faster because it sorts out the relevant files dependant on their usage. If that is correct then there is no reason why you cant install Linux as a boot drive and then use the four RAID drives for data. As I say I am afraid I haven't actually tried it for myself yet so maybe someone with experience of this can confirm it.
