Title: GA-Z77M-D3H SPDIF Optical Out
Post by: jo3yp on October 08, 2012, 07:11:35 am
Hi,

I need to get an SPDIF optical out for my HTPC with a GA-Z77M-D3H fitted. The SPDIF out connectors on this particular motherboard consist of just two pins - GND and SPDIF_O, there is no +5v.

The manual states:

SPDIF_O (S/PDIF Out Header)
This header supports digital S/PDIF Out and connects a S/PDIF digital audio cable (provided by expansion
cards) for digital audio output from your motherboard to certain expansion cards like graphics cards and
sound cards. For example, some graphics cards may require you to use a S/PDIF digital audio cable for
digital audio output from your motherboard to your graphics card if you wish to connect an HDMI display
to the graphics card and have digital audio output from the HDMI display at the same time. For information
about connecting the S/PDIF digital audio cable, carefully read the manual for your expansion card.

Is it possible to use one of the Gigabyte SPDIF panels that come with a 3 pin block and connect the +5v to another +5v source, or will this not work without being fed into an additional video/sound card as mentioned?

As for the coaxial output, since that is only a two wire connection, the SPDIFO and GND should be sufficient. Many/all modern receivers have coaxial digital inputs too.

Hi

Did you actually mean that you require an optical out connection or just spdif ?

Hi, thanks for the replies... The Samsung Sound Bar  (http://www.samsung.com/us/video/home-theater/HW-C450/XAA) doesn't have a Coaxial input, just Optical.

So to get the optical out on the adaptor working I was wondering if the +5v can be connected elsewhere on the motherboard e.g. a USB header.

For anyone who might be looking to do the same, I've finally got round to trying this and can confirm it works. I can now output via optical in DTS and DD :)

I had to split the cable and separate the header, connecting the SPDIF_O and GND to the SPDIF_O header and the +5v to a 5v connector on a spare USB header.

Cheers for the help.

@jo3yp:

I'm looking for the 12CR1-1SPOUT-03R bracket as well (for my GA-B85M-D3H). Can you suggest any online end user suppliers I can *still*buy it from?
Thanks.
