Title: Computer Wont Turn On
Post by: Atomic_Sheep on October 15, 2012, 08:31:15 am
Hi guys, ran across another problem with my computer. My PSU blew... and I RMA'd it and have got a replacement unit. When I took the one that blew out of my computer case, it had bits and pieces of falling out of it... so that leads me to believe that its capacitors exploded. Anyway, I installed the new PSU unit not 5 minutes ago and am unable to start the computer. Perhaps I have incorrectly connected up the cables, but not 100% on that one, I've plugged in the MB, CPU and Video Card into the logical slots and the IDE/SATA periphs into the other slots so all looks right. However when I press the power button on the PSU (MB light comes on) and press the power button for the first time, I hear a click... the fan begins to turn i.e. theres a split second of power applied and it doesn't even spin 1 degree... it just twitches... and the computer does not come on. Subsequent presses of the power button result in no actions from the computer... completely dead... the MB light is on however. After turning off the power button on the PSU and wainting for the MB light to go off and then turning it back on, same thing... first attempt yields the click and the fan twitch but not much else... are these symptoms synonymous with an obvious fault?

Hi

This is often what happens after a PSU goes tits up! More often than not they take out other components at the same time.It could have blown anything from a single component to most of your system. Sorry for the bad news but this is why we always go on about using good quality power supplies in rigs because a cheap one that lasts for a few months or so can work out being rather costly in the end. What make and model was it ?

Purchase a good make like Seasonic, CWT, Corsair, Thermaltake, Enermax, Gigabyte, Coolermaster, Antec, etc and try and get one with a single 12V rail if possible. Also make sure that you get one that is a bit bigger than your immediate requirements.

Is this the model of power supply that you had installed ?

http://www.amazon.com/SeaSonic-750W-Power-Supply-X750/dp/B002VAFDQS

If so it is a good quality one and I am surprised it failed. How old was it ?

Yes and March 2010... it blew in August this year. I actually had a spark with smoke coming out of it earlier on in the year so I knew it was on the way out... just didn't think it was going to fry my whole system. Since the spark, it worked fine for around 2-3 months.

Well... tried recabling everything again... everything works again, not sure... maybe didn't plug something in nice and tight last time or maybe I plugged something in into the wrong port thing. Looks like nothing blew after all... very happy :):):)
