Just wondering whether anyone was able to get 2G, 2.5G or 3G data on their tablet and how did you get it done.

Yes, I have and it's not overly difficult and I posted details in the rather lengthy post on S1080 upgrades et al; however, here's a shortened version.
Firstly, you have to install a Huawei EM770/EM770W mini-PCIE card, the former doesn't have GPS, the latter does, but I haven't managed to get to work. No other 3G card will work with the S1080 BIOS.
Secondly, you need to install the Huawei Mobile Partner software found here (just click the Windows button), which installs the drivers etc: http://www.huaweidevice.com/resource/mini/201111101685/mpartner/index.html.
Install a SIM card that provides data capability and launch the Mobile Partner software and it should automatically recognise the Sim card, network and allow you to connect. There's not much more to it.
Cheers

I thought I'd do an update on this one after a lot of frustration with the reception quality of the S1080 and EM77W. The antenna for 3G is as bad as that for WiFi, so you're always fighting to get a signal. I had the same trouble with my HTC Touch Diamond II mobile phone and decided to get the cheapest phone that was recommended by my carrier for strong signal in outlying areas. I ended up buying a ZTE T95 phone, which gives me outstanding reception if there is even a hint of signal about. All I now do is tether the phone to the S1080, using the ZTE Join Me software, and I get excellent broadband.

Thanks for the update.

Hi Ray
Do you still have Windows 8 on your S1080 and does your EM770W 3G board still work for data under Windows 8?
-
I've removed Windows 8 from the tablet, but everything did work under Windows 8 (as poorly as it did under Windows 7). On a side note, Windows 8 didn't offer anything exceptional and was more of a pain in a number of ways, so I went back to Windows 7.

Thanks a mil.

I bought the EM770U from notebookparts.com for 30 bucks. Waiting for it to arrive and we'll see what happens.

Look what I installed today on my S1080!!

The Mobile Partner software is not seeing my SIM card. Did you have to create any profile or enter any settings or did it automatically setup your connection for you? The SIM card goes in with the circuit board contacts facing up correct?
-
Mobile Partner should detect the SIM card right away. Yes, the SIM card circuit faces upwards.
I just downloaded the most recent version of Mobile Partner from here: http://download.myusbmodem.com/download.php?file=/Huawei%20Dashboards/Normal%20Setup/Mobile_Partner_23_for_windows.zip&start=1 and it uninstalled the old version and then installed the new one.
It detected the SIM card right away and registered a good signal; however, as I don't have any credits in my account, it can't register the card. I seem to get better reception with the latest software, so I may have to do a small recharge on my SIM card to see how well it now works.

Hey Ray
I downloaded the one from the link you posted above and installed it on my laptop just to see what version it displayed. It says 23.002.08.03.45, copyright 2004-2011. The version I got from your other link earlier up yesterday I installed on the tablet and it says 23.009.05.03.1014, copyright 2004-2012. So I think the one at the earlier link is the latest one.
It sees the card now (SIM slot issue), but it is asking me for an unlock code. :(
-
Ah, previous downloads didn't give me anything new, they must have been slow in updating their website.
I don't know about the unlock code, I think it's possibly something to do with your mobile provider, not the device.
If you go to Settings/Option/Profile Management, do you have an access number? If in the Settings/Diagnostics page there is no listing for the network/SIM etc, that means you haven't been registered with your service provider.
-
It looks like the Hauwei EM770 is locked. :(
-
Google 'how to unlock Huawei EM770' and there are quite a few references available on how to do this. I'd go through more than one link to see which one's are consistent. Mine, fortunately, came unlocked.

Got a similar problem with the S1082. The WWAN driver supplied does not seem to do anything. The device manger doesnt show the drivers in the COM ports, and putting a sim in doesnt do a thing. Think I'm missing something obvious.

Hi
Which wireless card did you install?
I assume that you have the latest Mobile partner software installed or did Windows install something?

;D
Feeling like I'm on cloud nine today!!
As you know the EM770U I got from notebookparts.com was locked. I went to various stores and one of the cell service providers and no one would even attempt to unlock the card. Notebook parts even offered to replace the card because they "never had this problem before".
Well today I was doing some additional reading and came across a piece of software call dc-unlocker client. (https://www.dc-unlocker.com/downloads (https://www.dc-unlocker.com/downloads)), I would loaded it and after paying $8 Euros I now have an unlocked EM770U 3G card in my S1080.
I was able to connect to the same cellular service provider that did not know what to do using their SIM card and got an EDGE connection. No 3G or 4G where I live.
I sent a text message to my other phone and I was able to browse the internet slowly :( . Going to try voice in a little while.
For some reason though the WIFI link is giving trouble now. Disconnecting itself and not reconnecting. Hmmm
Anyway I'm on cloud nine for the rest of the day people!!! Got my wireless data working. Now if they would hurry and give me some 4G loving.
The card cost me 29.99 USD if anyone wants to have a go.

Just a minor update.
I travelled this week and while in the other country, the card detected WCDMA, HSPA and EDGE. Unfortunately the browsing speeds were nothing spectacular. I was looking at the Mobile partner application which shows the upload and download speeds and I did not see it go past 60Kbps at anytime.
I still have not tried voice as I cannot find an application to do it with. I also seem unable to send service access codes from the mobile partner program. These are codes like *128# or *120#, which tell you your card balance or tell you what your cellular number is.
Nevertheless it works.
