Title: GA-M57SLI-S4 + AMD Phenom II X4 - so will it work or not?
Post by: rotaryman on March 03, 2013, 10:45:10 am
Got the GA-M57SLI-S4 rev2.0 MoBo.
Now I'm searching for a decent CPU for gaming, digital painting, and working.

I wonder, if all of Phenom II X4's will work, or it is restricted to just some of them.
I've heard someone runs this MoBO with X4 965 Cpu, which is on the list here (http://www.gigabyte.com/support-downloads/cpu-support-popup.aspx?pid=2539) marked as N/A.

So this is why I wonder. According to the list, the highest supported model is 955 in 95w version, which is not available in my country.
What should I do now?

I wouldnt use an unsupported cpu in any motherboard, Fried a bios chip trying to do that one time so speaking from personal experiance here.

Thanks for reply.

Okay, so I'd stick with Phenom II 945, but I can't find it anywhere.
955 95w would be even better, but it's completely unavailable to buy, they sell only 125w one. So I'm screwed with this board. Looks like either I find right Phenom II, or I have to go with older Phenom or Athlon... or Phenom II X3.
What'd you suggest?

Do a search f each one listed starting at the one you want. ( seems like you already did that one so move to next one ) Or get a different board to fit the CPU that you can afford or want.

The problem is, I can afford only either cpu or mobo.
I heard that Phenom II 965 will work, as someone is using it, but probably (not sure about it) the clockspeed will suffer, so I'd get about 1,7GHz per core instead of 3,4GHz. I wonder if it would be smart to go for it, and after some time, change the mobo to a newer one.
Is it worth trying?

hi rotaryman,  i got the same rev 2 board. had no luck in UK finding a 955/95w either.(UK)
if you can do without the L3 cache etc., i bought and fitted an Athlon ii x4 640 which was about 50%
of the Phenom price. runs really cool at 3.6ghz.
no code for anything better than the those mentioned on FHL bios version as far as i know.
strange that my Athlon64 6400 was a 125w chip and supported on this board.
as was previously stated, i wouldn't risk a non-supported chip
good luck

ps, can't get this board to run windows 7!!!

Thanks, I guess I'll go either for this Athlon or Phenom II X3, which is also supported regardless of speed.

So thanks again for your help, I'm gonna search for and buy one of them eventually.
