Title: 3Tb+ and Windows Activation Error
Post by: Evil Berto on June 12, 2013, 11:13:09 pm
OK guys, maybe you can help me out here.  I have recently purchased a 3TB Western Digital Green power Drive.

Installed the 3TB+ Unlock from Gigabytes website onto my GA-A75-UDH4 motherboard, Shut down the machine, installed the drive an booted up, Partitioned the Drive into 2TB and 800GB (thanks for that Gigabyte BTW) and restarted the machine.

No comes the fun part.  Windows Deactivated itself, telling me that I have 30 days to activate my windows installation, Click the activate Button and I get an error 0x80070005 (funnily enough my Ofice 2010 has also De-registered as well :S)

So after, now 4, reinstalls I have come to the conclusion that It must be the 3TB+ unlock that is causing this, as it seems fine until I install this.

Anyway, I'm waiting to hear back off Microsoft (still) but thought I would ask If anyone else has experienced similar problems with windows de-registering itself when using the 3TB+ unlock.  This is both on windows 7 home premium and professional 64 bit, both genuine, and the Pro had been installed for over 8months before the 3TB drive, and I'd had the home premium installed since first release before that.

Any Ideas as I'm at the end of my rope??

Install Windows on a different drive.

Assuming that youre using the WD green drive as your main drive; I really dont recommend doing that as green drives turn themselves off after a while (hence why they are only recommended for external/extra storage rather than using as the main OS drive)

Hi all, am also having the same problem. I am running a GA-H55M-UD2H Motherboard with Windows 7 and have just installed two 3TB Seagate Hard drives with the 3TB+ Unlocker to access them. After three installs, I have realized that the Unlocker is deactivating windows with the above error code. My OS is running on a dedicated 800GB Drive and the two 3 TB drives are for storage. Have now downloaded Seagates DiscWizard and am attempting to test it on my system before reinstalling again.

Update - have spoken to Microsoft and they have referred me back to Gigabyte. As I only downloaded the unlocker from Gigabyte the day before yesterday and this thread is over 4 months old, the problem has obviously not been addressed by them.

Seagate DiscWizard works fine with 3TB drives and does not deactivate Windows 7  :)

Normally with Windows 7 if you have a 3TB drive the most you can access is 2048GB. Windows 7 supports drives larger than 2TB if you covert them to GPT. This is done by:

Go into Disk Management
Right-click on drive label on the left.
Click Convert to GPT Disk

You will now have about 2794GB unallocated on the 3TB drive. You can partition it any way you want.

Warning the process of converting to GDP destroys everything on the drive so you must do it before anything is put on it.

Thanks for that, looks as if I have a lot of copying to do :)

I should have also included this:
Windows support for hard disks that are larger than 2 TB
