Title: USB on after power-down
Post by: arpad on July 08, 2013, 06:17:19 pm
Just got my new GA-990FXA-UD3 all hooked up and working and my first, little problem reared its head.

When I shut down the system various USB devices  - mouse, powered USB hub and USB hard drive - stay powered up. The only way to shut them off is to flip the power switch on the power supply.

Is there anything I can set in BIOS to shut down the USB devices when I shut down the system?

The USB header called F_USB1 is red in color. It is different than the two others in that it supports ON/OFF Charge. Header F_USB1 has power even when the computer is off so that it can be used to charge mobile devices like iPhones, iPads and iPod Touchs.

Check to see which internal USB header you are using. If F_USB1 is being used then switch over to either F_USB2 or F_USB3. These headers do not have power when the computer is off.

As far as I know ON/OFF Charge can not be turned off.

Sorry, I forgot about the internal USB headers.

No, I'm referring to the back panel USB headers. I've got my mouse and a USB hub plugged into the back panel USB ports and neither of the mouse nor the hub go off when I shut down the system. I have to throw the power switch on the power supply to finally shut them down.

My mouse and keyboard are connected to the top two USB back panel connectors. They lose power when the PC is shut down.

How are the devices you mentioned using the back panel USB ports? Are they using power from the USB ports or are they powered externally?

If they are powered externally then powering off the PC has nothing to do with whether the devices are powered on or off.

If the device has its own A/C adapter then powering off the adapter must be used to power off the device.

Some powered USB hubs can maintain power to connected devices even when the computer is powered off. The hub must be powered off manually.

The way I control everything is with my UPS. I have the computer, monitor, TV tuner, and speakers connected to the "Battery Backup" connections on the UPS. After I shutdown my computer I power off the UPS. When I do this all the devices connected to the "Battery Backup" are also powered down, Something similar could be done with everything plugged into a power strip.

I tried the mouse on all the back panel USB ports with the system shut down and the LEDs in the mouse promptly lit as soon as I inserted the mouse connector.

I have one powered hub that's plugged into a back panel USB port. There's also a printer, a scanner, keyboard and an external hard drive that's plugged into one of the USB 3.0 ports.

I can disconnect the power brick for the powered USB hub with the system shut down and the "power on" indicator LED on the hub stays lit. That tells me it's not getting power from the power brick but then I knew that because of the mouse.

I've got a "smart" power adapter that's controlled by the state of one device, i.e. the system. When the adapter senses the system "shutting down" it cuts power to all devices on the switched power plugs. The powered USB hub's power brick is on one of those switched plugs so like the mouse it's getting the power to light its LED from the system box, i.e. the motherboard.

That's why I was wondering whether there's some BIOS setting like "wake on LAN" that would keep USB ports powered even if the system's shut down.

The USB ports are powered in stand by via Stand By 5V rail.
So this is a hardware design/limitation problem/feature.
If it s routed this way i doubt the BIOS can do anything.
Some boards provide jumpers to feed the USB ports differently as you wish.

On the other hand look on the bright side ,the red lighted mouses are long gone :).

I had this problem with oldish usb devices like a 2yo seagate usb hdd - that drive died anyway (click of death) and the new usb3 Seagate works perfectly.

Sorry if I'm to late but newer Gigabyte MBs have a feature called On-Off charge, which keeps USB ports active for charging phones and alike even when turned off. There should be an option in the BIOS to enable or disable it.

I have the same motherboard.  According the manual only the internal USB header F_USB1 has the "On-Off charge" feature. All the other internal headers and back panel USB ports are normal ones and should not have power after shutdown. I have not found a way to disable it. If one does not like that feature then the best thing to do is just not use that header.
