Title: Compatibility problems
Post by: Frankie84 on April 21, 2014, 08:22:37 pm
Hi there, I am new to this forum. I am posting here, as I have a problem with my gigabyte GA-M68MT-S2P (Rev 3.0) motherboard. I currently have an AMD Athlon ii x2 processor (unsure of the exact model) but due to recording audio and using plugins i decided that i needed more cores. I tried replacing this with an AMD Athlon ii x4 640 3.0GHz socket AM3. But the processor dosen't fit. I have looked at the list of compatible processors on the gigabyte website and according to that, this processor is compatible. Am I missing something here? Also I know that this motherboard is a very low cost option, but can someone please advise me what is the best processor I can put in it. Just till I have the funds to really upgrade. Any help on this subject would be very much appreciated.

Check and see if any pins are bent on the motherboard socket. This could prevent the chip from fitting.

Done that, no luck.

Hi there,

silly thing to ask but you are trying to put the CPU in the correct way around? line up the small triangle on the CPU with the correct corner on the CPU socket.
Make sure the lever next to the CPU socket is in its raised position.
Check the CPU carefully as even one pin, out of alignment can cause problems with fitting.
Check the old CPU to see if any of the pins have been damaged during the removal process. One or more could have broken off and been left in the CPU socket.

Ok, this CPU definately dosen't fit. I have checked the pins against the socket and there is no way this works out. Can anyone please suggest a CPU that will work with this motherboard, preferably with the most cores possible. I have been looking at the AMD Phenom ii x6 1100T. But I have also been reading that some people say it works but others not, as the voltage is 125w as opposed to 95w. Any help would be much appreciated.

That Athlon II X4 640 should fit. By the CPU list that is on the list. Can you give us the CPU part # off of the top of the CPU's It should look like this ADX640WFK42GM

http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/K10/AMD-Athlon%20II%20X4%20640%20-%20ADX640WFK42GM%20(ADX640WFGMBOX).html

Power to the CPU shouldn't matter If you are using a 4 pin plug that is 150 watts. If you are using 8 pin plug that will be 300 watts.
