Title: Random Reboots (WHEA-LOGGER ID 20 win error)
Post by: Sgaroz on December 13, 2014, 02:21:53 pm
Hi,

What i'm experiencing are random reboots (it happened 4 times), BUT while i was navigating in google maps, or watching a video on Youtube. Problem started to happen since the case was swapped by a tech to fit my Sapphire Radeon R9 290 Tri-x, which is pretty big...

I did several tests, and all went fine (memtest86+ 3 passes; Seagate HD diagnostics; Sfc/scannow). I didn't experience any problems during gaming.

The error codes are (pasted from Win Event Viewer)

...it happened again, and i was browsing on firefox again (searching for a flight on Bing). Here it's "Who Crashed" log:

On Sat 13/12/2014 11:12:08 GMT your computer crashed

crash dump file: C:\Windows\Minidump\121314-25864-01.dmp

This was probably caused by the following module: ntoskrnl.exe (nt+0x4ADB3C)

Bugcheck code: 0x124 (0x0, 0xFFFFFA80082BA8F8, 0x0, 0x0) Error: WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR

file path: C:\Windows\system32\ntoskrnl.exe

product: Microsoft® Windows® Operating System company: Microsoft Corporation

description: NT Kernel & System

Bug check description: This bug check indicates that a fatal hardware error has occurred. This bug check uses the error data that is provided by the Windows Hardware Error Architecture (WHEA).
This is likely to be caused by a hardware problem problem. This problem might be caused by a thermal issue.
The crash took place in the Windows kernel. Possibly this problem is caused by another driver that cannot be identified at this time.

A "Thermal issue" seems a bit strange, because HwMonitor showed low temperatures (between 20-35 °C except for the 43 °C of the graphics card). I really don't know what to say...

Please help!

You are reading the BSOD error codes?Oh okay event log.LOL.. ntoskml.exe You've just updated your graphic's card. Is that a new build? And it was working fine before you got the new card put in? Sometimes part of an old driver gets stuck and causes problems. I could suggest running drivercleaner pro in safe mode. from guru3d.com. Then reinstalling the drivers. But if that file has been corrupted then you've wasted that much time. A clean install of windows should fix it. If it's not a hardware problem. Once the problem is solved for sure. If you haven't already update to to the latest bios.

I did a clean install of windows (from 8 to 7) but unfortunately the problem persisted... I do think, at this point, that is indeed an hardware issue...i just wanna find a way to find out what hardware piece is faulty!

Nice card!!! All I can think of that might make sense, other than case shorting or a bad card. Is that system requirements for that card is a 750watts min.
While the corsair is a good psu and usually underrated on the 12v rail(s). I think it might be possible that the card/board may need abit more power from the low volt rails.(Dual GPU!!) But I really don't know its just a guess. Also as the psu is getting older and as the capacitors age they tend to get weaker.  Anyway that might not be the problem. But it is my best guess though.  One of the reasons why everyone tends to go way overkill on power supplies.   It really doesn't pay to skim on that item.  Corsair or Antec I've had good luck with. I killed two OCZ's a year two inna row. A different OCZ lasted three years.  Of course avoid the really cheap ones sometimes when they go they sometimes damage other parts as well.

Have you tried 3d gaming? It only crashes in 2d mode?

That's about only thing I can think of right now...
Lemme know what you do and how it all works out.
Best to you and G'luck with that.

The PSU has more then enough volts & amps to run it. There is really no difference between a single rail & a multiple rail PSU. http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=157583

They are really all single rail PSU. The Real multiple +12V rail units are very rare and are all 1000W+ units. The PSU thing is so overrated too.  I have 3 ultra PSU I have had for almost 10 yrs they are still running too.

What I think it is something is shorting out on the board or the card. Stop and think about what you said. Everything was alright till you had the case change. I would bring it back to the tech, tell him what is going on.

Thanks for the answers,
1. i chose that psu after calculating how many W my system would need (w/ PSU calculator or something like that). It's strange 'cause i manage to play several hours (next-gen games) without any problem, although i could expect a system crash while browsing on firefox/chrome (in fact, every crash happened while i was browsing, which is interesting..)
2. i would eventually bring it back to the tech...problem is: he supposed something is wrong with the mobo (GigabyteGA-78LMT-S2P (Socket M2) so he suggested me to deliver it back where i bought it... there's a problem though: i lost its box while i was moving out from my home AND i don't actually know how to find if there's really something wrong with the mobo. There's a way to test it for errors? Or only by trial and error?

Hi,
i agree with you, but Sapphire Support clearly don't: here's their response to my problem.
"Dear Sir
Suggest you update motherboard bios, chipset driver to the latest version first with CD driver or v14.12 whql driver for your card. If still the same, please take video and upload to youtube for us. This card power supply also required 750W, please note. Will check for you later.
Regards"
What do you guys think about their response?

Suggest you update motherboard bios, chipset driver to the latest version first with CD driver or v14.12 whql driver for your card.

That is what I would try first. If it still does the same thing. Then it sounds like you had another video card right. You could try that card just to see if you still have the problem.

Of course dmdilks is right.  And of course if that fails. Take it back to the guy who put it together.  Maybe a standoff is off center,or the card needs an RMA. And he should have an uber super-over-kill psu to test with too..   Myself I've never had good luck with psu's though..At least since the ATX standard came(edit)into vogue anyway. Though people do bring me computers that are often 10-14 years old and the psu's are still fine.  I was thinking in terms of the 3.3-5v rails. Still on that PSU they are rated @25amps each. Should be good! That is a really big card though.

Edit: With a weak 12v rail generally problems happen in 3d when gaming or running benchmarks. So that's not it.

Edit2: Yeah try the old card.. Please be very sure the problem is gone absolutely before flashing a bios as sapphire said. Drivers? I think I mentioned that.. You have a clean install. With the newest drivers? (I took that as a given..)

Please do, lemme' know what happens with that.   That's a nice card. (I want 2X!)LOL. Computers there are so complicated and so many things that can go wrong. Sometimes we get distracted an forget the obvious.  Though I'm sure the tech guy or you already did it. (major hardware change).  CMOS clear-"load optimized" set video device to pci-express.(PCE or whatever the bios says)  Though money is hard to come by these days. That card certainly looks like it deserves a better main board. And you do have a bigger case.. So....

I am power-supply traumatized no doubt.  Mem sticks too... LOL... Gee whiz I wonder why?
Lets see what happens when we do THIS!!!  And for my next act.......

Best to you... And please do let me know what the problem really was.,

On looking at reviews on that card one is it uses a lot of power and two a lot of people complain about crashes, blue screens and so on. Not sure exactly which card you have as there are at least 3 models of 290. I noticed you are running monitor at (1920x1080@144Hz)  try turning it down to 60 HZ and see what happens.

Interesting...my card is a Sapphire Tri-X R9 290 4 GB version...i'm really going nuts with this because:
1. it doesn't happen all the time, BUT almost all the time i was watching videos/navigating in google maps (= on a browser)
2. I'm pretty convinced by now that the issue points to an hardware fail...but i really really want to know WHICH piece of hardware

IT HAPPENED AGAIN... with this log (similar to the past one):
..Successo di nuovo, stavolta stavo giocando (ad un gioco diverso). Il log di Who Crashed è il seguente:
On Mon 22/12/2014 00:08:42 GMT your computer crashed

This was probably caused by the following module: ntoskrnl.exe (nt+0x4ADB3C)
Bugcheck code: 0x124 (0x0, 0xFFFFFA8008338038, 0x0, 0x0)
Error: WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR
file path: C:\Windows\system32\ntoskrnl.exe
product: Microsoft® Windows® Operating System

description: NT Kernel & System
Bug check description: This bug check indicates that a fatal hardware error has occurred. This bug check uses the error data that is provided by the Windows Hardware Error Architecture (WHEA).
This is likely to be caused by a hardware problem problem. This problem might be caused by a thermal issue.
The crash took place in the Windows kernel. Possibly this problem is caused by another driver that cannot be identified at this time.
              ------
I opened the case to verify if the NB was really overheating...i could stick my finger on it for all night long with no problems, it was just slightly warm.
I really don't know what to do at this point...I keep on hoping it's a simple driver issue...

I was Having a problem with my X99-UD4 board with BSOD. I run ATI cards and I have had 3 different card with the same thing. I have now change memory and it has not BSOD since I change it on Sat.

I have to see if this will work, because other people were having the same problem and that is now they fix it. I have a BSOD log program and it is telling me video card problems.

I'm starting to think that it's actually a Video card issue because i recently installed Mass Effect 3, which is a pretty old game but for some reason appears to stress the video card quite much.
I downloaded a Sapphire program which allows you to control options like video card's fans speed. I tried to tune up the fans to 50%, disabling the automatic mode (that keep the fans lower)...and the system didn't crash playing the same point i was playing when it crashed few times. The problem is that the crashes seem to be pretty random.
