Title: Update of AHCI driver on GA-P67A-UD4-B3.
Post by: BaJohn on October 16, 2015, 04:22:32 pm
My current version of SATA AHCI controller on my GA-P67A-UD4-B3 board is Vers 10.0.10240.16384, dated 21/06/06.
This seems a very long while ago.
The official website from Gigabyte does NOT indicate a later version for my board.
From trawling the Internet I get the impression there might be a later version that would possibly work.

Can anybody confirm that a later version is available and where from please?

Greetings,
Is this Intel or Marvell controller?
What OS are you running?

Hi - thanks for responding.
How can I tell which controller as I think both are on the motherboard?
OS is Windows 10 Pro.

Hi again.
Found out by reading manual and Marvell is for the eSATA ports on the back panel, which I do not use.
Therefore it is the Intel controller.

I think this will be easiest for you.

Did this a couple of days ago and it said everything that it tested was up to date.
However, I do not believe that it necessarily tests the "Standard SATA AFCI Controller" driver.
The optional manual test at the bottom doesn't. It looks to me as if this is for INTEL boards.

Anyway, I have seen elsewhere on other sites that the "Standard SATA AFCI Controller" driver can be updated,
so am sceptical about the tool.
I wanted to 'come to the horses mouth' so to speak to get a definitive answer.

If you've been at this for a while, then you've already discovered that nothing "official" has been ratified for P67 and IRST under windows 10.

I'm surprised that even windows update hasn't offered something more current than 2006, but I'm not there to see it.  The 2006 date sounds remarkably like the "Msahci" default MS driver, which if this is the case, you never had installed any intel IRST drivers for the controller in the first place.  What happens if you try searching for an updated driver in Device Manager by right-clicking?

The other thing to consider given the age of the system.  If its working, and providing an acceptable level of performance verified using ATTO, Crystal Disk..  or your app of choice... is leave it alone.

"Standard SATA AFCI Controller" << I suspect this is a typo on your part and what you are meaning to say is "AHCI".  Since updating and/or changing this driver incorrectly could render your machine unbootable 0x0...7B "Inaccessible Boot Device" error, be sure you have a back up, restore point or are comfortable manipulating the registry if you are going to experiment.

When comes to that controller Gigabyte really doesn't have anything to do with that controller Microsoft & Intel do. If you not having any problems other the driver is at that date? I would leave well enough a lone.

I do have to add to this is if you are not having any problems no matter how old a driver is. Doesn't mean you have to update your drivers or bios. They put out new drivers & bios because people having a problem. Because the driver is newer than the one you have doesn't mean you have to install it.

I'm not just saying it to you. I'm saying this to everybody. People if you are not having a problem. Like I say all the time don't fix what isn't broke.

It is the storahci.sys driver dated 21/06/06 Version 10.0.10240.16384.
I have seen later versions which 'appear' to apply to my situation, both on Intel and other sites including 'driver' orientated sites. Unfortunately there are discrepancies in the dates and versions available.
The windows update for the 'Standard SATA AHCI Controller' returns nothing, which as already stated is the same as the Intel tool.
Perhaps you are right in that leaving well alone is the most sensible answer.
I just thought that that in this forum someone would pipe up and say "Yep have same board and I used XXXX and I updated to YYY and there was no problem - went like a dream."
Anyway - thanks for some interaction.
Regards

In continuing my investigations I found the following here http://www.tenforums.com/drivers-hardware/20756-sata-drivers-update.html.
'As far as the "Standard SATA AHCI Controller" don't worry about the date but look at the driver version. 10.0.10240.16384 came with the 10240 RTM of Windows 10. I think the date is when the driver was first released and does not change when the versions change.'
That seems to make sense and also explains why I found a discrepancy between dates and versions on the internet.

Also of interest is this info on http://www.win-raid.com/t895f42-Intel-Chipset-Device-quot-Drivers-quot-INF-files.html,
which concerns Intel drivers.

It all just goes to show that things are very complicated and not very clear.

I hope this helps others towards a greater understanding of how these things work.

Thanks - I think I am now happy to call it a day and accept that this is probably the latest, and identical to mine.

As I quoted earlier ..... 'As far as the "Standard SATA AHCI Controller" don't worry about the date but look at the driver version. 10.0.10240.16384 came with the 10240 RTM of Windows 10. I think the date is when the driver was first released and does not change when the versions change.'

Regards everyone.
