Can anyone help, I have a SM951 128gb M.2 PCIE drive with clean install windows 10 on it. Also 16gb DDR 4 Corsair ram yet the boot time is 1 min from cold! My old PC was a Phenom II 1045T with 8gb DDR2 and booted in 40s! Have tried everything in the bios unplugging all other drives / set to Ultra fast boot etc nothing brings it down from cold boot. (If I restart from the bios sometimes it boots in 30s missing the black screen / dead space at the beginning but I cant get a quick boot from cold. Very disappointed with this board. Virtually no explanation of what the bios setting actually do in plain English! A YouTube link below shows what's going on during boot.

Exactly the same is happening with my computer: z170x-gaming 3 and sm951 256GB ahci. I did not figure out what is the problem.

Yeah thanks. I spend £1000 on a PC that boots slower than my 5 year old one! So-call superfast SM951 PCIE blah blah blah. super speed blah blah.
A guy on your forum was taking about how you install windows having an effect? GBR or something. Please god don't tell me I have to reinstall. Also I cant see any setting about the M2 , nothing about SATA mode or making sure its in PCIE x4 mode or something as other people have been saying.

Do you have it set to windows 8 or 10 in the Bios under the OS. Plus when you install it. Did you make sure everything was set to UEFI and the DVD was set to UEFI. One other thing that I have found don't have any other drives connected other that drive and your DVD drive. Windows will put the Boot Manager onto another drive.

thanks for your reply DM. I created a bootable win 10 usb drive with rufus. there was 3 options .
1.MBR partition scheme for bios or uefi
2.MBR partition scheme for uefi
3. GBT partition scheme for uefi
I think I chose option 1. Please don't tell be I have to reinstall!
Also in the bios there are 3 obtions. "other os" win 8/10 and win 8/10 whql are you saying middle one?

ok so I went back and checked. When you load to iso in rufus it loads up the option which I actually used which was.
MBR partition scheme for bios or uefi-csm
Am I screwed?

Things have been changing big time. It is all about UEFI today. If you don't have things just set right. Some things don't work right. When you run 8/10 you have to have this set to 8/10. Yes you screwed and have to maybe reinstall or try changing some of the setting and see what happens.

Ok so what you are saying is you have to set the bios to 8/10 BEFORE inserting the stick and installing win 10.? Think mine was set to "other os" during installation. Incidentally does this only effect boot or is my m.2 underperforming all the time because of this?

I would say mostly the boot time. You really shouldn't see any under performing. The M2 is better than a SSD, but not as good as a PCI-Express 2.0 x4 adapter card.

I've got the same issue utilizing a Samsung 950 Pro 512 GB with my Gaming 7 MB running Windows 7. The drive performs great after desktop but takes 1:05 to boot. The machine just pauses 30 seconds after post.
I've seen a lot of complaints with other NVMe drives and come down to how long it takes to initialize the drives. If there is a solution, I'd love to hear it.

Yup - Ive been here with a Samsung 950pro + a Gaming3 mobo. Turns out you MUST install using UEFI. I used the Microsoft MediaCreation tool to create a bootable USB stick. First install was from a DVD - took a minute to boot. Used a USB key, now takes 10secs!

What are correct bios settings under Windows 8/10 features to install win 10 in GPT mode? CSM ? Keys?

Boot Option Priorities
Specifies the overall boot order from the available devices. Removable storage devices that support GPT format will be prefixed with "UEFI:" string on the boot device list.
To boot from an operating system that supports GPT partitioning, select the device prefixed with "UEFI:" string.
Or if you want to install an operating system that supports GPT partitioning such as Windows 7 64-bit, select the optical drive that contains the Windows 7 64-bit installation disk and is prefixed with "UEFI:" string
You want to boot up on the UEFI DVD or USB
Windows 8/10 Features
Allows you to select the operating system to be installed. (Default: Other OS)
You want this set to wondows 8/10
CSM Support
Enables or disables UEFI CSM (Compatibility Support Module) to support a legacy PC boot process.
Enabled Enables UEFI CSM. (Default)
Disabled Disables UEFI CSM and supports UEFI BIOS boot process only.
This item is configurable only when Windows 8/10 Features is set to Windows 8/10 or Windows 8/10 WHQL.
You want this disabled but this one really doesn't matter unless you want everything UEFI.

OK, I follow these instructions, make uefi usb (http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/15458-uefi-bootable-usb-flash-drive-create-windows.html) tried with rufus then manually but when windows start install I get message that drivers missing. I create cd with mb_driver_intel_bootdisk_irst_64_100series but didn't help.
When I installed windows 10 UEFI mode everything went well and the boot time problem was also resolved.
So what drivers are missing in my W7 USB bootable flash drive?

You can't use these when installing W7. It has to set to (Default: Other OS) With W7 the only thing that you use is UEFI DVD or USB. I just built 2 computers doing this way with W7 UEFI DVD or USB .

Update:
The boot times are an acceptable ~20secs with just an update of the BIOS to F7b. This is without a UEFI load of Windows 7, only the BIOS update!

Setting it UEFI makes it boot much faster. You have to have the windows disk in the DVD drive or the windows USB plug in. To use UEFI boot device. If you don't have them in either one you can't choose the UEFI device.

I would have to reinstall windows to do it, so I'll just deal with the extra 8 seconds of boot time until I have another reason to reload windows.

I myself I don't really care about boot times. Been doing this far to long to worry about the small stuff. All I care that the computer comes on and it boots into windows other then that no big deal about boot times. lol ;D
